Painting the Chrome
So I'm thinkin' about paintin' all the chrome on my truck black so I can have a black/blue theme to start it out with. I know the plastice door moldings that are "chrome" can just be refinished and painted, but what about the actual chrome on my front and rear bumper? And the grill? Any ideas?

Re: Painting the Chrome
The actual metal can be scuffed and preped and painted. The grille is plastic so that can be preped and painted.

Rly? That's it? When I had asked a local body shop about it (the people who do my paint and such) they said it was a hard process to get through. He wanted $600 to do it, but said that it probably wouldn't be guaranteed against damage because the chromed metal was so hard to prep. What do you think?

People paint their bumpers all the time if that guy told me $600.00 to strip the chrome off my bumper and paint it Id tell him to stick it up his Azz.

Re: Painting the Chrome
It is a little time consuming to do it right. You have to make sure all the prep work gets done right otherwise it is going to chip and peel in no time.

Re: Painting the Chrome
Might be easier and cheaper if you buy a paintable bumper off ebay.

Yeah, and of course I want it to get done right. Any idea on what a normal price range would be for such a project?

Re: Painting the Chrome
I have no clue. Here at the dealership we charged a guy $1,200 to paint both bumpers, grille, and chrome piece on the hood of a 2008 2500. BUT, that is at dealership labor cost so that is really high.

That is pure insanity before I decided to put my Rollpan on this dude Alan Davis of Sinizter Customs I know told me to buy the paint and he would paint my bumper's for 200.00 he does great work It's his superduty on the homepage. So Im just saying to look around If you know someone it helps but don't pay 600.00 to have your fuggn bumper painted.

this is the route, buy a non chrome bumper and sell the shiny one to make up for the cost!

Re: Painting the Chrome
Sorry to hijack the post, but what do you use to scuff the chrome before primer?

Re: Painting the Chrome
in order to paint chrome -

sand with 80 grit all the way to 400 grit. make sure you sand it throughly.

once you get it sanded you need to ETCH prime it.

after you etch prime it you are now ready to put a 2k primer on it. I use napa martin senor crossfire.

After I hit it crossfire i will wet sand it with 500 grit and then i grey scuff it with a scuffing agent. now you are ready to apply sealer, base, clear.

Re: Painting the Chrome
Jut buy a bumper shell online. They are made of abs plastic and come ready to be painted, For my 99 tahoe I could do front and rear for like $300 from stylintrucks. I'll prolly pint the rear OEM one tho and order a shell for the front, that way I wont have any holes it will just be smooth.

Re: Painting the Chrome
Yeah, but for my '04 Sierra it's a bit harder. It has that chrome upper piece (the section I want black) connected to the lower valence (the section I want blue). Lol...too much thinkin!

Re: Painting the Chrome
Oh I got ya, you could always have it sandblasted, or just sand forever I guess, it will be worth it tho once it is done and done right and you know you will not have to go back later to fix it
