a somewhat different problem

Just joined this group, just got a truck last week. I have a 95 chevy w/t. It is bright red. Paint is in good shape, faily bright all around with just minor scratches. The problem....on the driver side door, there is a faint outline of some lettering and numbers, such as one of those signs or something. I used some very mild turle wax polish...it helped, but you can still see the lettering. What should i use to remove those letter outlines. I am no expert, and I am a little afraid to use anything more abrasive. Suggestions?

The issue here is that the lettering kept the paint underneath from fading. Now that the letters are gone, that nicer paint is exposed.

Anytime I tackled such a project, I found the most effective way to minimize or sometimes eliminate the shadows is to very thoroughly polish the paint on the entire panel(s). This is best accomplished with a rotary polisher and the proper compounds/polishes.

By doing this, you will make the surrounding paint look as good as the newly exposed finish. This will blend it to where it's either the same or so close that the letters don't show except under close scrutiny.

You'll have to start with a paint cleaner (Oxidizer) then a rather heavy polish once or twice with a machine buffer and you should be in the clear.

Definately agree with recommendations above. Use paint cleaner on entire panel and then use a good polish (I tend to like Meguiar's polish products). If you really get after that entire panel, you should be able to mask the defect to most people. Although it will most likely never completely go away.
