Polishing aluminum.
I just purchased a CNC machined from solid 1/4" thick billet aluminum (6061 T6) bumper cover for my HHR. This was a prototype from a company and it never made it to production. I've gotten it yet, but they told me it's a brushed finish. Here's a pic of it and as you can see it has ball milled lines.
I'd like to give this a mirror finish, what would it take?
Got it at a good price, and since it's a one of a kind, couldn't pass it up.

They listed it for sale on an HHR Forum.

Re: Polishing aluminum.
Wetsand up to 2000 and then use polish. After the 2000, I would use a Powerball and then finish it up by hand.

2000 grit and then powerball, extreme metal polish good for the final polish? Or something else?

Re: Polishing aluminum.
Yeah, whatever polish you like. I like to use the Mothers stuff that comes w/ the powerball and then finish up with 200MPH polish.

Will do, looks like it arrives on Monday according to UPS. I don't think I have any 2000 grit so I'll have to pick some up.

Re: Polishing aluminum.
Question on wet sanding billet, best to do this by hand using a block, or can I use using an orbital, or vibrating sander?

Re: Polishing aluminum.
I would look for someone where you live that does metal polishing and have it done.

Though about that, but have no clue in this area. I've never had to look into something like this. Not even sure what type of places do metal polishing.

Re: Polishing aluminum.
Don't just get 2000....end up with that. I would start out w/ 800, then 1000 and then 1500. Use a sanding block and follow the "grain" that is in there already.

I had planned on moving up and not starting with 2000. I'll be curious just how machined it actually is. It'll be a project to play with.

Re: Polishing aluminum.
The "brushed" or #4 finish looks like brush strokes on wet paint. Shouldn't take much to get it out. If it was flat it would be easier but those milled spots look big enough to where they won't be a pain.

I'll have to see what I have to fit in those spots, or just leave those and give it a dual finish.
Rest should be pretty flat.

Re: Polishing aluminum.
I have to say buy this. It works extremely well. It is amazing. It makes a powerball look like nothing (in my book it is).

Re: Polishing aluminum.
You can sand with fine paper to start and then u get different grit of rouge and several buffing wheels about 6-8" in diameter or bigger.. you do one stage at a time working all the scratches out and then buff to a mirror. It can be very frustrating without the right stuff. I use 6" wheels on a hand held grinder and a big 16" baldor buffing machine.
