Re: OBS diesel's
Well to the guy talking about lifting a diesel truck is just for show I think not. My truck is a '93 3500 that is completely stock except for 8.5" lift, SAS swap, and 39.5" tires. I just got towing a 1978 25' Cabin Cruiser. Had no problem going anywhere. Towed it like it wasn't there. The only thing I did notice is that it got a little hot(210-225 range) and that it would slow down up steep upgrades. But that is because of the gears.

My upgrades are going to be as follows:

Gauges(#1 priority in a diesel. Gota know what ur truck is doing)
Exhaust
Intake
Cooling upgrade w/ dual 2500cfm electric fans
Dual Tranny Coolers
Dual Oil Coolers
Aluminum Cored radiator
Boost Controller

The truck towes anything and everything fine and spits plenty of black smoke. My truck has 182,000 on it and doesn't skip a beat. Has been well taken care of and I just perform regular maintence.

About the only thing I would trade my truck for would be a truck in the 4500 series range.

Electric fans on a 6.5 is asking for an overheat condition...

They can't move anywhere near the same CFM as a properly working clutch fan....

Better off buying the D-max fan and clutch and just bolting it on...

Just my 2 cents....

Re: OBS diesel's
If you buy the right electric fans they will be more efficient than a clutched fan. They will move just as much air through the radiator with no problems.

true, less of a drag on your motor. but, you have to make sure that they can move the same cfm or more.

Re: OBS diesel's
I bought my diesel late last year. It has been running like a champ, and I haven't had to replace much, besides a coolant temp sensor and an oil pressure switch, and regular oil changes. Both were inexpensive items. My diesel runs a 17 second quarter, and thats a stock engine with a 4" exhaust. I have big plans for it in the performance dept. I have have had it for 16,000 miles, since 162,000. It knocks like a metallic knock sound, but it is probably just normal diesel knock. It is very dependable for a DD, but in the winter idk what I will do. Probably a tank heater and plug the engine block heater in.

Re: OBS diesel's
It will start just fine. Just make sure you have good batteries, and a good glowplug system. Maybe look at getting a set of Quick Heat glow plugs. Pluging it in certainly helps, but you won't even need that if you run Synthetic oil in it.

Re: OBS diesel's
mrgoodwrench, what oil weight do you recommend for the 6.5 in the winter?

I run 10W 30 in the winter (as per the owner's manual)....we can easily hit -40 degrees celsius in the dead of winter....keep it plugged in at all times!

Re: OBS diesel's
When I pulled the engine out for a rebuild on my old truck I installed 2 block heaters. One on each side. That was the BEST cold weather mod EVER! I had to park that truck for a week at a time in -40 weather. I'd get off work, plug it in, and it'd flash up no problem in about 20 min. I also had a small battery charger that was always pluged in and kept the batteries topped up with a 2A trickle charge.

Re: OBS diesel's
Thanks for the tips. I might try and switch to synthetic oils, I always run 15W-40 (dino/sythetic blend), usually the delvac 1300 type i think. My Grandpa ran Chevron 15W-40 in his trucks after talking to the truckers about what they used. I was thinking of a tank heater too, to help the fuel not jell, for the cold starts. I might need to change my glow plugs before the winter to help with the cold starts.

Re: OBS diesel's
Delvac is good I think for the price and quality Delo is the best. I had heard good things about Shell Rotella T syn. for winter starts.

There is a factory fuel heater in the filter housing. I'm not against adding extra stuff to make cold starts easier, just FYI. New glowplugs would certainly help if the condition of yours is poor or unknown.

Re: OBS diesel's
Does anyone know of an aftermarket Glow Plug for a 6.5 that might be better or longer lasting?

Do a search for Heath Diesel or SS Diesel Supply.
