Allison Upgrades
My truck isn't a Duramax, it's an 8.1, but I figured I could get more info hear than in the performance section.Lookin for a shift kit, I don't think that it can be changer throught a programer, I may be wrong though. Planing on doin a different cam Raylar heads, and intake after the winter. should I do any more upgrades to the trans? probly be makin 400-450hp. but It still won't have the massive torque the Duramax's produce, so will I be ok?

thanks

I don't know what kinds of numbers the 8.1 puts down for torque. But anything over 100hp over stock is where you have to start worrying about the tranny for the diesels. If I were you I would contact this guy he knows all about 8.1s http://www.tbyrnemotorsports.com/

Re: Allison Upgrades
That's where I'm probably gonna get the Heads/Cam/Intake from. The 8.1 (2004) is makin 455 Ft-Lbs.pretty far off the D-Max.
I don't like how it shifts, not quite as crisp as the 4L80E that was in my 03 HD. Seems to kill the power.Won't burnout from 1st to 2nd. I know it's not an intelligent thing to do but i had to try it. Just don't want the power to hurt the truck.

Re: Allison Upgrades
TQ is the real killer of Ally you should be ok I would think, but it could fail. All you would need would be a Transgo and a new converter to make it last for sure.

Re: Allison Upgrades
Do yourself a favor & dump the 8.1L for a Duramax and save yourself a ton of $$$. Horsepower upgrades get a lot more power for a lot less money, and you can actually use a wallet to carry around funds for fuel instead of taking up space in the bed of your truck with the sacks of cash you need to keep that big block full
Drive it like I stole it? Why slow down?

Re: Allison Upgrades
I just bought the truck about a month ago. it was 10 grand cheeper than the same truck with the Duramax. If I put 8k mi a year on it, it'll be alot. tought to justify the deisel for that kind of cash. Not looking to run 12's, its a 3/4 ton pickup.( I've got a Mustang and a Firebird if I wanna go fast) Just looking to play with the truck some, Probly have it for a long time considering I put on such low mis.
