I know it's not a chevy but i don't have the dough for a D-max but i thought someone might know. Can you build an auto in a 98 dodge cummins to last? and if you can do you have to have a deep pocket or is it reasonible?

Re: tranny ?
yep, DTT, Goerend, ATS, Suncoast...they all make Dodge stuff but expect to pay ~4-5k because you need billet input and output shafts on the dodge tranny's.

A tranny can be built up for just about anything, it's all a matter of how much $$$ ya got.

some good sites for more info on dodges:
www.dodgetrucks.org
www.dodgetruckworld.com/forums
www.inlinediesel.com

are all good sites to get info on the dodges and the CTD

Re: tranny ?
just put a different tranny behind the cummins (4l80e, allison, th400), th400 and 4l80e are easy to find and not hard or expensive to rebuild, not to mention exceptionally strong auto trannies.

Re: tranny ?
With the time and $$$ you'd spend adapting & getting a GM trans you'd be better off just going w/ an ATS, SC, DTT, etc. They'll hold what you want them to plus w/ those you should get a warranty.

I don't know that you'd have to have billet input/output shafts that'd depend more on the power you've got & how you use the truck

Re: tranny ?
an adapter for a cummins 6bt to a chevy auto tranny from advance adapters is not that expensive at all, around 3-400 bucks.

rebuilt 4l80e or th400 tranny ranges from 1400-2k for a normal rebuilt tranny.

having your dodge computer reprogrammed for the chevy tranny, might not need it or no more than 200 bucks.

so if you go max price for the chevy tranny, 2k for the tranny itself fully rebuilt, 400 for the adapter, and 200 for the computer reprogrammed only comes out to 2600. even if you had to buy a stand alone computer for the chevy tranny it would run at most 3200. (stand alone computer ranges from 800-1200) still cheaper, easier to find, can still be upgraded, and known to survive for well over 100k miles being towed with every day. all those parts i mentioned come with warrenties.

check out www.dieselplace.com, theres a guy on their that put a cummins 6bt (cant remember if he put a 12 valve or 24 valve in) into a 94 chevy z71 truck, and theres another guy who put a cummins 4bt into his 80's blazer mated to an sm465 manual tranny (his original tranny that was behind his 350 gasser).

main thing on any auto tranny to worry about is heat, if your gonna be towing fairly heavy on a regular basis get a tranny cooler and a b&m tranny pan, as well as a temp guage.

Not a bad point at all, but if you factor in how much more you'll pay in labor up front & down the road should there be issues, it'd be cheaper to go a strengthened trans from one of those places. Plus you'd have a warranty...

are you talking about a warrenty from the shop doing the labor? if thats the case then it would just depend on where you take the truck. some shops will warrenty putting the chevy tranny in, others wont.

i completely understand what your saying and agree that it would be simpler and less likely to have a warrenty issue down the road. just depends on if the shop will warranty a tranny change, always check the fine print .

2 people at my complex have late 90's era dodge pickups with the cummins and auto, a 3/4 ton extended cab and a 1 ton regular cab dually. the 1 ton guy uses his truck to tow daily, pulls a 26' flatbed trailer with misc. construction equipment (small scale). after he went through 3 trannies in a year he put an nv4500 in. the 3/4 ton only tows at most once a month, she's went through 2 trannies in about 140k miles and then put a chevy 4l80e in her truck (she did the work, good job too). now she has 215k miles and no problems.

Re: tranny ?
I'm mainly talking about parts warranty from whoever you choose to get the trans from... Some of them cover labor too, provided you meet their criteria (ie has to be thru an authorized dealer of theirs)

Re: tranny ?
Suncoast FTW, with the trans experience that both suncoast and ATS have with that trans, you can't lose either way. They also have different trans packages you can choose from, to best suit your needs.
