i know i can do turbos and all that but it is a work truck and i don't want to dump endless money into it i just don't want it to be a dog and have as much or more power than a 24 valve. are there not cheap mods, i do plan on straight piping and a programmerbut will i be happy it already has an airade cold air intake.

Re: 12v cummins
You cant put a programmer in a 12v it doesnt have a computer, try larger injectors an intake and a better exhaust look at pavementsucks.com in the diesel section.

Re: 12v cummins
Go to the diesel truck resource site and learn about the 12 valve. I've been around them for some time now and you can make a lot of power with the 94-early 98 12 valve with little money. All you need is a set of gauges, pyro and boost first and most important, then add a fuel plate/ $125 and a $75 governor spring kit, block the turbo wastegate and you are ready to put out some serious torque. If you are running an auto tranny you will need to take it easy until you can spend about $3K for a built one. What you need to look for is a P7100 pumped 12 valve, that motor will run forever. I just sold my 95 yesterday and am really missing it right now. Stay away from the 24 valve due to VP 44 and 53 block problems, these were produced from 98.5-02 yrs. I've owned a 99, 95, and 03. My dad currently has a 93 12 valve.

Re: 12v cummins
If you're serious about performance consider a whole turbo rather than blocking the wastegate - much safer & you'll get better results. 98.5-02 24V doesn't have VP44 problems, it has lift pump problems that often manifest as VP44 failure - get a better lift pump setup (FASS or something similar) and you're fine.
Most of the mods on the 12V or *relatively* inexpensive, but you'll have to probably do several in combination to get what you're after.

Re: 12v cummins
If you decide to go with the 24V, better check for the 53 block.
You'll never see a VP 44 go as long as the P7100, regardless of what causes the failure. |

Never discount the 12 valve. I'm still looking for one (I'm picky). These engines can make lots of power and do it easily and more reliably than the current 24 valve platforms. I just sold two 2001 24 valvers. One 3500 QC HO and one 2500 QC SO. Both great trucks. The injection pump issues are not a problem if you know what to look for and modify the system so you can monitor pressure and replace the lift pumps easily. If you wany to learn about these engines and vehicles, visit the TDR. I have been a member there for years. Invaluable resource. Great forum and great people! If you are searching for trucks watch for the "53" block. Here is more detailed info. on that: http://www.stamey.info/Truck/Cummins...NewInformation It is not "that common" but it is a problem and should be avoided. 12 valve engines are not really involved with this discussion, as well as most of the HO's. I just got a used gasser Chevy and I am actually amazed by the mileage and power. Mileage is about the same as the Cummins. I was amazed when I got 19 MPG on the first tank? But..... I do miss the Cummins power and that diesel rattle under the hood...

The factory lift pump setup on the 24V is laughable, and if you see the way its laid out it becomes easy to understand why it invariably causes injection pump failure.

Re: 12v cummins
fuel plate, gov spring kit, open up the exhaust, deff get some gauges so you know whats going on, play with the timing. if you get it right and you have a manuel expect to start spinning past the clutch and if its an auto that sucker will be toast in no time.

Re: 12v cummins
At my old work they turned up the IP a lot. They had a lot more power. However, this would cause the exhaust temp levels to be insane. Also they would pour out the smoke. They also turned up the turbos to put out 30-40lbs of boost. I don't know exaclty how they did this but all I know is they hauled A$$. You have to get a Pyrometer to be safe. With a trailer exhaust temps would get into the 1200+ range easy. When you get up to 1000 deg you pretty much had to let completely off the throttle to let it cool. When you stopped you also had to let them run about a minute to get the exhaust under 500. If i remember correctly they had them both dynod the 92 was 275hp and 1200 tq yes 1200. The 93 was 375hp and 576 tq.
They had the power but you couldn't use it towing. The 93 even had dual 5inch exhaust to help but it was minimal. |
