oil pressure problem
My 03 duramax 6.6L oil pressure is all over the place from 40psi to 80psi while running down the highway and then occationally when iddiling it will drop low and give me a low oil pressure
on the warning light where the odometer reads.

any one have any ideas what might be going on? possibly something simple like the pressure sending unit?

how is the oil system set up on these? like what are they using for pump style, how is it driven, what is being used for a regulator, etc..

thanks.

Re: oil pressure problem
Well if it helps at all, the oil pressure changes as your engine RPM's increase or decrease. However, I don't think it should be giving you the warning light while idling. I think I read you only need 7 PSI while idling. Search for "oil pressure" I think and find the thread that the guy had a similar problem. There is a list of what your oil pressure needs to read while at certain RPM's.

But yeah, no idea why it is fluxuating so much.

Re: oil pressure problem
How's your oil level? Type of oil (brand, synthetic or conventional, viscosity grade, etc.) Please don't take offense to the basic questions...

Re: oil pressure problem
If your oil level fine I bet it’s the sending unit or gauge/cluster.

Re: oil pressure problem
I just got my duramax back from the dealership, they said the gauge cluster went out and replaced it. and said nothing was wrong with the oil pressure. but still the oil pressure drops while iddiling and low alarm comes in. while running down the highway with rpm stedy oil gauge is bouncing - back to the shop it go's. i think a different shop this time, to have the sending unit checked out.
oil level is at the full mark and has not changed. I am running
15W-40 conventional.

Re: oil pressure problem
my cluster had to be replaced when i first got the truck. my pressure in the morning was over 120, and my speedometer would catch and bounce.
