rumor or fact?
I have herd a rumor numerious times that in the near future the truck companies will have a pcm that will recognize any aftermarket tuner and will not allow the truck to start unless it is back to a stock setting? if this is true either the chip makers are gonna have to get crafty or there isnt gonna be jack for the new trucks. If this is true im guessing the price of tuners are gonna be much more expensive

Re: rumor or fact?
All vehicle manufactures are looking into this I am sure.
A major warranty cost(at least Cummins believes this) is for folks that put aftermarket components on the trucks that cause damage to the engine or driveline. They then pull them off and get warranty work done and put them back on. I am not 100% familiar with these products, but I am guessing this might be a rough example... say someone has a several stage box from like Bully Dog(I don't even know if they make one) and they do something that Bully dog never even intended(like cranking timing too much or cranking fuel up while other parameters are wrong(not sure if this is possible on most companies components..but I am sure it is possible on some)) and it causes damage to the engine. They screwed up, but they take everything off and go to the dealer and it gets fixed under warranty. Should the OEM have to pay for that persons screw up? I don't think so and neither do the OEMs. I know Cummins has looked into ways to defeat the aftermarket before. It is still being looked in to as a major warranty expense is what I stated above. I am also sure, as soon as a manufacturer comes up with something to defeat this, the aftermarket will get crafty and work to defeat it as someone stated previously.

Re: rumor or fact?
If they just had some sort of DataLogging they could tell what parameters have been messed with and see if it is a warranty issue or a user error on the tuning.
I know most PCMs are locked and people have a hard time editing them...Hemi's...Titans and the like. ![]() Thnx 9chevy4 ![]() Quote:

Re: rumor or fact?
i side with the manufactures on this one. they should not have to pick up the bill when people are adding insane amounts of hp and destroying stuff. you got to pay to play! people just need to pony up and learn some responsibility

Re: rumor or fact?
X2 but when they void the warranty for over side tires and straight piped exhaust that is BS. If the mod truly cause the problem then if should be your $$$ to fix it.

Re: rumor or fact?
i think they need to get the computers to say why something broke. was there to much forced air? was there not enough back pressure? the computer should be able to give more information, then just whats wrong. I mean look at the day in age we live in, all the amazing things they can do with computers these days.

Re: rumor or fact?
I'm with dozer; it goes both ways, so retail customers pay a lot of money for problems that weren't their fault & should've been covered under warranty just like dealers pay for some repairs they shouldn't have to.
It's usually pretty obvious when somebody had something cranked up so high it caused a problem. They can lock down a computer all they want, that'll just eliminate tuners, not boxes. A box modifies computer output to get what it wants, then modifies input so the computer never sees what happened. The ECM already data-logs, but it has no way of knowing the data it's logging has been modified.
Drive it like I stole it? Why slow down?
