Eric Clapton song. Just replace propane with a similar sounding illicit drug that is usually found as a white powdery substance. My buddy has propane injection and he says it mostly helps pulling his toys over the mountain passes. |

According to the site, it is over $700 for the set up, but that does not include the tank. By the time you add the tank and other associated stuff (like gauges that are also not included), you are going to be around $1200 - or more. The Bully Dog tank lists out at over $700, but can be had for a little over $500. Let's see, $700 + $500 = $1200. So the pricing is not way off.

Re: Propane
First let's dispell a couple myths. No, propane doesn't act as a "catalyst" and help burn diesel more efficiently.
No, propane doesn't burn "hotter". Diesels are just compression ignition heat engines, the more btu's you pump into the combustion chamber, the hotter the exhaust, be it diesel, or 'pane. I'm running propane augmentation on all my diesels, simply because 'pane here is less than half the price of diesel. On my '01 Ford F350 PSD, I'm running 50/50 'pane/diesel. Volvo Gravel truck with 444 Cummins, 60/40 diesel to 'pane. Ford Picker truck with 7.9 Brazilian 6 Cyl Diesel, 60/40. Each truck has a pre-turbo pyrometer, and the drivers are instructed to under no circumstances go over 1200 Degrees F. on the pyro. At 1200 F. the power boost is substantial, but not enough to hurt the total powertrain. The equivalent to a 40% torque boost over stock. Yes, a "chip" to pump in more diesel can give as much, or more power, but obviously at a price at the pump. Running propane reduces the amount of carbon build up in the oil, so much so, that at 10,000 KM (6000 miles.) the dipstick on my PSD is tan coloured. How many trucks running on straight diesel see this? So....I have doubled the oil change intervals on my diesels, which again represents a significant cost savings. All my kits I bought off e-bay, by being patient, and kept my eyes peeled for deals. Average cost to put 'pane augmentation on my diesels was $800.00 each. The net total fuel savings on my PSD is approximately 30%, factoring in the extended oil changes. No, I'm not in the propane business, just like to push the envelope so to speak, and do things a bit differently. If anyone would like to quiz me about the kits, fire away. turbine guy. |
