Re: Possible Diesel Combo In 1500
Hehe I was a 63B (hummer mechanic) in the army for almost 6 years. I have to say no to the non-turbo 6.2. It has somewhere around the same eng. specs. as the newer 2.8. I've blown a few of those up before too. lol I have also tried to pull another Hmmwvee before and it was crazy slow even with the offroad gearing. Heck it even had a hard time going up normal hills on it's own. The Hmmwvee is a heavy truck though and it was full of parts and water and food and people and tools. I think my 5.3 has more torque by far though!

Re: Possible Diesel Combo In 1500
The allison trans is WAY to big for the 2.8L. You would be much better off using a 4L80E (probably still WAY to big for that engine). With the 4l80e you could use a TCI stand alone controller. Although i am not sure how you would rig up some of the sensors for it.
IMO the cummins 4bt and 4l80e combo sounds like a winner.

Re: Possible Diesel Combo In 1500
I am looking into the isuzu 4bd2tc swap. Could my stock LS1 pcm be edited to still control my 4l60e, haeat, A/C and other stuff? Any ideas?

Re: Possible Diesel Combo In 1500
I think to do that you'll need a stand-alone controller for the transmission. Hard to say. I haven't done that swap yet. That would be a alright engine to use if you can find a adaptor plate for it. Cummins you can find adaptor plates a dime for a dozen.

Re: Possible Diesel Combo In 1500
What else does my PCM control other than the engine and trans? When I took it in for a HVAC noise, the tech said there was a software update to stop it. Does the PCM control the HVAC too?

A military truck won't necessarily be guaranteed to have low miles, and more then likely it will have been beat up.
But sometimes you can find a good one. ![]() 96 Silverado ECSB, 350, 4L60E, 3.42 G80 89 Camaro, 5 speed, 3.08 LS 49 F-1, flathead 6, 4 speed, 2wd, unknown rear end. Old rust bucket. |

Re: Possible Diesel Combo In 1500
Well I don't know if this will answer anything. But when I helped a friend with his 6bt swap. We used some of the sensors like oil sensor, water temp sensor and I think he used a tuner to delete or disabled a bunch of stuff. But in short he's still using the original pcm. Which basically runs nothing more then the transmission 4l80e. I believe his abs brakes still work as well. So you might be alright there if you can do that.

Re: Possible Diesel Combo In 1500
He put in a 93 cummins 5.9 into a 1998 Chevy k2500. He got most of his parts off the Internet, adaptor plate for transmission, engine mounts. He went to the junk yard got a used torque converter for $75. We basically unplugged the wiring. Pulled the Chevy 350 out which was broke from piston slap and broke a piston rod. Changed engine mounts, put new adaptor plate on. Put starter in that came with adaptor plate. Changed torque converters. Dropped 6bt in hooked up tranny and engine mounts. Hooked up sensor wires and ignition. He got a diesel tank and radiator off a 97 Chevy 2500 which took a hour to put on. After that he had it running the next mourning. He had a exhaust shop put the exhaust on and thats about it, other then him doing a few things with his tuner. I wasn't there when he did that. I just helped get the engine in. He uses that pickup to tow a steam engine tractor to tractor shows in minnesota, south and north dakota, wisconsin and iowa. He wanted a duramax but couldn't afford it so this swap was his idea. He's ran both bio-diesel and regular diesel in it with no troubles.
