Propane
I am going to buy a Duramax in a little over a year. Going to try to get an 05.

I am going to try to figure out all the quirks and mods that I can do without getting to far into it, and without just wasting money.

So my question is, do any of you have propane injection on your diesels?
If so how much did it help with mpg, and power. (not looking for dyno #'s, unless you have them)
Was it worth the money for the kit?
Is it worth spending the money on the propane for what you get out of it?

I know it will have a pay off time. I also know that can take a few years if you don't drive it every day or long distances when you do.

I am just thinking, and for those of you who don't know what propane injection does in a diesel, it is supposed to, completely burn the fuel going into the cylinders, adds power "by burning all fuel", and gets better mpg "by getting a complete burn". If it actually does get a full burn then I can see where it would be worth it. If not then it would probably take to long to pay off. I also don't know how much the Duramax dosen't burn compared to older diesels.

I know that was kinda long, but thank you for your patience, and your responces.

Re: Propane
i dont know too much about propane injection but you got the right idea and ive seen it in use on the dyno on a dodge cummins and it gives a pretty decent bump in power but can also be used to increase milage. if you go over to www.dieselplace.com they actually have an entire forum on propane, nitrous and water/meth injection, you should be able to get all the info youre looking for there.

Re: Propane
A few years ago when I looked into it unless you could find propane for real cheap it wasn't worth it for mileage and for power your much better off just getting a tuner.

A propane set up will run you around $1000 to $1200.

You can get a tuner for around $300.

Re: Propane
Your way off on the pricing you can get it at AllTimeAuto
for $669
and propane can be used together with a edge or superchip style programmer. So you don't have to decide one or the other. I like my propane system. The mileage increase offsets the cost of the propane.
Rolling with an AFe cold air intake.

Right so why not just get a tuner and get more power, not have to haul a extra tank, and have 2 different fuels to fill up with? Other then for High HP the only benefit from pane in cleaner oil if you just want more range per fill up get a bigger tank.

Re: Propane
Why don't you just get a bigger truck? Tuners, mods, intake/exhaust, propane, water/Nox, etc... Why not get the GM "Kodiak"? Yeah it costs more, but it's got lots of power. No mods done and don't have to worry about voiding any warranties (if that's an issue).

As to the original poster, I believe you're wanting the propane for better mileage. I understand that. But for those wanting to squeeze more and more power out of their trucks by doing such drastic modifications has always bewildered me.

Oh well, that's just me. I'm not knocking down anybody that wants to do those things to their own truck. It just surprises me, that's all.

Re: Propane
over here many diesel fork lifters and gas cars are built for propane cause its cheaper than gas/diesel..but normaly nobody do that on diesels cause you get a lot less power than with diesel..

I thought the reason propane is used on so many fork lifts is to reduce the emissions when the forklift is used inside a building, like a warehouse. Wrong?

Actually the 3/4 and 1 ton Duramaxes make quite a bit more power than the kodiak series. The medium duty truck just has lower gearing, bigger axles, and I believe the Allison 2000 series tranny. And a medium duty truck will never run with a modded 3/4 or 1 ton, not to mention they will get much better mileage because they don't have such low gears.

Tank,

Ya see, I learn something new everyday. Thanks for the info. I did not know that.

Re: Propane
actually in the bigger Kodiak's, i think 4500 and up(maybe 5500 not sure?) you can get a 7.8? (not sure on size) i6 dmax that does have more power, but im sure still slower due to weight. propain doesn't seem worth while. there are other cheaper ways to try to squeeze milage out of it first, like intake, exhaust, tuner, more boost ect, and those mods actualy give you some more power. propain doesn't add too much performance.

more boost does the same thing, more air, less unburnt fuel. simple. you can make a boost controller with stuff from the hardware store for around $10- $15. but then you need the $50 boost guage to go with it, still fairly cheap, and its nice to have the guage anyway.

edit: nevermind didnt realize its an 05, the lly has the vvt. but it does have an egr that can be blocked for better milage. just examples of cheaper ways to pick up mpg/power.
