Chevy Cummins
I hate dodge (not Cummins though) and a gas engine gets really crappy gas milage. I don't want to waste my time putting a diesel v8 in either (just don't think it would be worth it) Has anybody done this? Would anybody suggest this? Is it worth it? Thanks...This would be done on my 75

Re: Chevy Cummins
Depending if this truck is a daily driver or a towing truck. You could put in either a inline 4 or inline 6 cummins.

Actually a 6.2 or 6.5 detroit diesel wouldn't be so bad to put in.

If you get the cummins, probably better off grabbing a tranny right away.

Re: Chevy Cummins
Yes. I think this would be an awesome truck. I probably would drive it as a daily driver.

They make big inline 4 cylinder engines big enough for my truck?

Re: Chevy Cummins
Yeah theres a few that have suburban 2500 with the 4bt inline 4 cummins. Gets around 30+ mpg. He has it running here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oQEo9IPYIlo

I'm thinking this guy used his original transmission. He must of got a adaptor plate or something. But I wouldn't be afraid of a setup like that at all. Although If I was going to tow a big fat camper then I would go with the inline 6, 5.9 for sure.

Re: Chevy Cummins
Wow, that seems pretty small. I heard the 4bt ones only have 103hp and like 250ft lbs. I would like to have a 5.9 Cummins over the 4vt. I would like to tow stuff and do some minor wheeling.

I don't think you get it. A 6BTA would likely tear your truck apart. The 4BT was often found in Bread Trucks, Delivery vans, etc. I think with a little bit of tweaking and some adjustments, you'd be happy with it's power. Besides, stock they put out damn near what the TBI 350 had for torque.

Re: Chevy Cummins
4BT would get you unreal gas millage numbers if thats what your after, I've seen plenty of people tow with them and they were made for commercial use so I wouldnt throw a 5th wheel plate in the bed but I think you'll be alright for bumper pulling just use good judgement. Get someone who knows what they're doin to play with the smoke screw and its not uncommon to see those put down very respectable torque numbers for their size.

Re: Chevy Cummins
I am not worried about the torque numbers, I also need hp too. I would like to tow a 20ft camp trailer in the future and I am going to buy a car trailer and haul a truck on top of it it, so probably a goose neck car trailer. Thanks

If your not worried about torque numbers then why are you going for a diesel? The stock 12 valve cummins that you love had 180 to 215 depending on where you lived and if it was a manual or not which is less then alot of the 4 and 6 cylinder gas engines found in cars. It would be way cheaper to go buy an s10 and get more ponies wouldnt it? The new common rail cummins has 305hp and the hemi has 345hp, why in the world would people spend the extra money to buy diesels if the hemi is so much cheaper and has more horse power (Hint: its not because impressive chips and mods in most cases)? I'm not gonna get into the whole "WHAT IS HORSE POWER" and its importance discussion because its been beat to death. If I was in your situation I'd ponder a little on why it isnt uncommon to see sports cars and such with more horse power then the semi that has 8 or 9 of them loaded on to it, hmmmm maybe torque is a bit more important than your giving it credit for. The big cam 855 cummins only have 350-400 horses but torque is 1850ish ft lbs, catching my point hopefully.

Re: Chevy Cummins
Yes, I know. I meant I don't really care what the numbers say. A 4bt isn't going to cut it any day with a camper or my 20ft camp trailer and someday me goose neck. Yes, torque is way more important that hp. Hp doesn't really do ****. I occasionally drive a 90hp car. I sometimes could get rear ended by a moped. Torque is very important, that is why I am after a diesel. I don't want a gas. I love diesels, Chevy or Cummins, or even Ford, I love diesels. I am not sure I know everything about how torque and hp is calculated and all, but I know what it means. Thanks for the reply. I am sorry I made it seem different to you. But that is not really what I meant.

Here's an example of torque - Why do you obviously never see a sbc pulling a gooseneck trailer with a tractor on top?

I'm having a hard time understanding your logic, you knock on the duramax and talk down about it being a v-8 but now your buying a 6.5 . I'm not discouraging you from getting one I'm just curious what disqualifies the 6.5 from your previous posting on v-8

Re: Chevy Cummins
The price of Cummins. It's outrageous. I just wasn't fond of them. I am learning a great deal about them and found out that they aren't bad. For the price, I believe they are the best bang for the buck. I am still a firm believer that a Cummins is more reliable. But I am not made out of money, and I just want a diesel. This is actually my second in line truck. Cummins, chevy, then ford. I can't afford a god damn Cummins. Thanks

Re: Chevy Cummins
First and foremost, in 2004.5 the Common-Rail Cummins 5.9L was rated at 325hp and 600lb-ft. Latter 2005 the torque was increased to 610lb-ft.

Secondly, You are looking in all the wrong places for a good 6BTA Cummins. You need to slow down and keep an eye out for wrecked or otherwise damaged vehicles that had either 4BT or 6BT in them. You're not going to get a half-way decent deal trying to buy a running/driving truck just for the engine. You obviously don't know as much about diesels as you claim if you are dismissing the 4bt as being unable to do what you ask of it. It's no powerhouse, but I'd put it up against a gooseneck trailer any day of the week...

I wouldn't. I am looking into buying a whole truck to drive instead of doing a swap.
