Intake Question for my Dad.
My Dad has a 2004 2500HD with the Duramax. Not sure if it is the LLY or LB7. But either way...he is wanting to put an intake and exhaust on it, but not sure how long it will be out for either one. My question's are: (and keep in mind he has a Diablo programmer on it already)

1. Can he put just an intake on, no exhaust right now and it run fine, or does it need both at the same time??

2. Will putting just an intake on show any gains at all in performance?? (or fuel mileage for that matter)

3. What brand/model intake do you guys recommend for his diesel? (what is the most common or the most highly recommended that is seeing gains)??

I want to get an intake on fairly quickly if it will help performance any at all. I am driving his truck down to Florida from here in NC in a little less than 2 weeks and would like to have it on before if it will help anything at all. He would really like to get it where the turbo is a little louder...not extrememly loud, but whines a little more. Figured an intake would probably help that out some.

Thanks guys.

Re: Intake Question for my Dad.
exhaust is more important, especially if its an lly it has a cat, get rid of it. cooler egts, better millage, and a little better throttle response. intake is pretty good factory on the d max but youl see a little bit better throttle response with one, theres really no advantage with a full intake over a drop in and a swiss cheesed box though. and itl make it sound way better, turbo will really whine especially if its an lly, them vvt turbos sound nice.

Re: Intake Question for my Dad.
There is no need for an aftermarket intake until you start getting up in the 500RWHP range. The only thing he will get from adding an intake is louder turbo whistle.

But as for intakes, AFE makes good one as well as S&B.

Hope that helps

Re: Intake Question for my Dad.
The only time you would see a gain is if the air flow in and out was increased. I agree with the guys above. The performance gain will not be felt by the seat of the pants. Fuel mileage maybe about the same. Depends. Some people get a air intake and all of the sudden they develop a lead foot. Then your mileage drops.

Re: Intake Question for my Dad.
i got a full intake just because i like how they look/ it was a good deal on ebay, otherwise i would've just cut the box and put a drop in and it would do the same thing. afe and aem make the best filter imo, but k and n is good also. as fas as exhaust just getting rid of the cat will make the difference, if its an lb7, you wont see as much gain since they already have no cat. both mods are mostly just for sound if you ask me, the slight mpg/performance boost is just a bonus.
