Re: Duramax oil capacity
Light duty trucks hold 10 quarts and the C4500,5500,6500 hold 14-16 quarts.

If you give those zerks 1-2 pumps every 25k miles or so that would be way more then enough. I don't understand why people think you have to make grease bust through the boots before its got enough grease. Grease won't evaporate, it can't go anywhere so if you grease it once that grease will still be in there. The new ones don't even grease anymore. I've all but stopped greasing customer vehicles at work because 90% of the time the boots are already buldging or they busted.

You are quite the idiot to think that 2 or 3 pumps from the factory will last the lifetime of the joint. Sounds to me like you and tools to work on these trucks is the bad combination..

then why the he!! am i changing ball joints on my dads sable at 50k? and my 99 F150 needed them at 65k. i only replaced the ball joints on my HD at 90K cause i was putting the lift on and figured i might as well but they could have gone longer. also, the boot on one of my lowers is torn but its holding up fine still cause im able to grease it every month or so. ![]() 03 GMC 2500 HD crew duramax, 6" full traction lift. 37/13.5/20 Toyo Open Country MT's, ATS E-Power tuner, AEM intake, Stage 3 allison 452 RWHP/755 TQ verified on superflo dyno, 7/19/08 (ATS level 10) and thanks to Chuggs for the sig!

Well you have the theory down, but not the real world practicality. Sealed wheel bearings, ball joints and tie rod ends frequently fail in less than 100,000 miles, at least on GM stuff. I can't speak for other mfg's because I don't work on anything but GM, but I have replaced a lot of the aforementioned items that had between 70K and 100K on them. You are right about over greasing. Watch the boot, grease it until it starts to swell and stop. This may be one pump or several.

Precisely, I can count how many times we replaced greaseless joints on Fords/GMs at the shop I worked at. I would even go so far while the car was being serviced to use the needle on the grease gun and put some in these greaseless joints.

Re: Duramax oil capacity
Well 10 quarts will be what your oil pan will hold, And for grease zerks. I change my oil every 8,000 miles. After I do that. I check my oil level in the differential and rear axle. Then each zerk I give it one pump of grease. I rather be a little low on grease then to much. To much grease can pry things apart like tie rods ends. So one pump is all I give them so they have something to work with. Some of the new chevy cars have no grease zerks at all. Which is nice maybe for a woman, But for me I worry if it's dry or there is something actually in there.

Re: Duramax oil capacity
uh...lets not get carried away byes..!! we can all play in this sandpile.
Back to D,max oil capacity: Std pan is 10 Qts (litres). I ended up adding a FS2500 secondary oil filtrations set up to mine..it takes an extra litre and a hlf to fill the lines and filter. System uses a 2 uM filter cartridge. I typically do my OCI at 12,000km and the oil is in excellent shape. Takes 2-3000km to just turn dark. for what it's worth. cheers, stk
