Re: motor swap
i think an older 12 valve 5.9 cummins would be the best motor for that swap.

03 GMC 2500 HD crew duramax, 6" full traction lift. 37/13.5/20 Toyo Open Country MT's, ATS E-Power tuner, AEM intake, Stage 3 allison
452 RWHP/755 TQ verified on superflo dyno, 7/19/08 (ATS level 10) and thanks to Chuggs for the sig!

Re: motor swap
I think a 6V53 Detroit would be a cool swap.

Re: motor swap
I seen the 5.9 go from $5,000 to $2,000. To get a good idea of cost, search ebay.

Re: motor swap
for the older 12 valve, you dont need a pcm, all you need is power. Thats why these type of motors are desired.

Re: motor swap
Older cummins like the 5.9 12-valve or even the 4bt/4bta can run on a cherry picker with nothing more then a battery connected to it. Has no computer at all. Very easy swap to do. Wouldn't be much different then throwing in another chevy small bock in. Only difference is you'll need a adapter plate for transmission. A torque converter. And engine mounts. The wiring is simple. I could do that swap in 2 days myself. The 3rd day would be a day I would probably clean up the engine bay. Make the wires nice and neat looking, Like a factory look. Maybe change the air filter hose or maybe get a cummins air filter setup. There is alot of ford truck owners that do this same swap.

Heres a 1986 chevy with the 5.9 cummins 12-valve. You can see the engine bay yourself. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j7F_bMxLBBU I think this guy is using electric fan for the radiator, But I can't tell. Might be something to look into.
