Over the past couple of months I have been researching the benefits and detractions of adding a water or water/meth injections system to my D'max. Initially I was after a method of keeping the motor clean should I decide to go ahead with adding another system...heated Waste Vegtable Oil (aka WVO).
Seems the biggest issues with going that route are: Securing a good supply of WVO that is hopefully cheap or free, keeping the lube oil from getting unburnt WVO in it (causes polymerization - ie; Thick GOOP.!!), and heavy coking/buildup of the exhaust valves. I found after a lot of reading (and I admit I have no personal experience nor empirical evidence just anecdotal from other posters in at least 4 different forums), that it seems that the effect of adding water with a bit of meth is to prolong the burn cycle (meth is flamable too), and with diesel fuel having an affinity for water vapour - cooling the air intake charge - thus compressing more 02 and thereby burning more of the available fuel, as well as cooling down the EGT's, reducing NOX, and reducing coking and carbon build up on cylinder walls as well as exhaust valving. The super heated water vapour in effect "steam cleans" the motor. WOw...one would think this was the miracle cure...Yet that is exactly what this appears to be.! After continued reading at various places it seems that quite a few guys are actually using their WW fluid (blue type) as the source of their water/meth product..!! ( I would caution anyone to check the ingredients before doing this...might be some glycol in the mis..and that would not be such a good ting in yo motor eh.?) Reports of modest power gains (40-60 Hp) and mpg gains in the 2-4mph seem to me to be reasonable given that this type of system can apparently increase the totality of burnt fuel from 80/85% to nearly 100%. So for some $450.00 CAD, I think I am going to try this set up with the WW reservoir to boot.!. Now to be sure and fair, I have been informed that this water/meth injection boost will kick in only after ~10lbs of boost is noted and continue while that amount is in use..?/ I could be wrong about the exact boost number. However for someone like my self, that tows from time to time on some wicked hills, this could be real usefull. Anyway, not sure if anyone here has read on this stuff or not but figured some may find this interesting and want to investigate. Keep in mind this is not new technology, they were doing it in P47's and P-51's during the 2nd world war for added power. cheers, stk

Re: Water/Methanol Injection: MPG/Power etc
meth injection is really a great tool. Although I have never had any experience with it on a diesel motor, I have however had a meth injection system installed on my supercharged ZO6. It definately helped cool down the intake charge a ton! Another benefit was the 35whp gain I got from it as well. Keep in mind that I had to tune my car for the meth though. Hope this helps you some! It sure does help keep the "guts" of the motor nice and clean.

Some people that do not run straight WVO. They mix it with kerosene. I guess it helps keep everything cleaner.

Re: Water/Methanol Injection: MPG/Power etc
You got the right idea.
That's why I am thinking of doing it when I get a deisel. Don't really see why not at this point. I will add this though. On the WWII planes (could be wrong) it was just water used to keep them cooler. ![]() 96 Silverado ECSB, 350, 4L60E, 3.42 G80 89 Camaro, 5 speed, 3.08 LS 49 F-1, flathead 6, 4 speed, 2wd, unknown rear end. Re: Water/Methanol Injection: MPG/Power etc
I dont know enough on water/meth injection but on a newer diesel i'm not sure if i'd go with a WVO conversion. I would recommend going with the extra steps to make biodiesel. And if i recall i think kerosene is mixed during the colder months since WVO/Biodiesel gels at around 40 F.

Re: Water/Methanol Injection: MPG/Power etc
It most definately has its benefits as I have ran it for around a couple months now with not a bit of problems. You might look into devilsown injection. They are very reasonable in price and have great customer support and communication. I have never had a bit of trouble with with them, their kits, or upgrade parts. I went from EGT's raising as boost increased to temps staying consistant. Which enabled me to stay in boost longer and it allowed the engine to burn its entire cylinder of fuel.

Re: Water/Methanol Injection: MPG/Power etc
Sorry old post but...
If you run this constently when your over 10lbs boost wont this damage the engine? I have who runs the washer fluid into the turbo but only when he presses a button he did it for preformance only and made it sound like if he used the methenol and had his chipped turned up that the engine would blow up. |
