Whats the best Intake for the duramax??
Hey everyone, I would just like some opinions on what you guys think is the best intake for the duramax. I have a 04 LLY and so far I have the banks six gun tunner w/pda and a magnaflow 5" exhaust. I was leaning towards a closed style intake like a S&B or a banks but would like to get some other peoples opinions first. Also anyone have good luck with throttle body spaces, And can you use an aftermarket intake with them? Any input is appreciated. Thanks

Re: Whats the best Intake for the duramax??
the best intake is the stock one as far as I have read, aftermarket ones will not show you the gains you would expect on a gas engine. I have the same model as you with the 6 gun just no exhaust plus a k&n air filter, didnt really notice the difference but I got a good deal on it. Good luck

Re: Whats the best Intake for the duramax??
i have an AEM brute force on mine but really the stock intake is good enough on these dmax's up to about 500 HP. most guys will just "swiss cheese" the stock air box which consists of cutting holes in the intake box to allow some more air to flow but replacing the intake itself doesnt really get you much as far as performance goes. they do sound a little better but if i hadnt have gotten mine so cheap i probably would have left the stock one in.
oh and just to let you know, there is no throttle body on a dmax cause of that little thing called the turbo... heres a link to some good cutaway photos of a dmax, look at the last one and youll see how the intake goes straight into the turbo. http://duramax.bizhosting.com/sema_2...ax_cutaway.htm ![]() 03 GMC 2500 HD crew duramax, 6" full traction lift. 37/13.5/20 Toyo Open Country MT's, ATS E-Power tuner, AEM intake, Stage 3 allison 452 RWHP/755 TQ verified on superflo dyno, 7/19/08 (ATS level 10) and thanks to Chuggs for the sig!

Re: Whats the best Intake for the duramax??
Don't bother. Unless you are pushing way over 500hp, intakes are a waste of money and as studies have proven, let in additional dirt. Put the $$ towards a programmer instead.

Re: Whats the best Intake for the duramax??
What got me thinking about the throttle body spacer was when I was looking on JC Whitney, they have throttle body spacers for the Duramax. So if there is no throttle body then how can they sell it as a throttle body spacer?? heres the link to the page where I found it: http://www.jcwhitney.com/Fuel-Savers...49_10101.jc w
So as far as the intake goes, the best bang for my buck would be to buy a K&N drop in filter that replaces my stock filter instead of buying an entirely new intake?? Thanks everyone! |

Re: Whats the best Intake for the duramax??
i would just mod your stock airbox...if you really wanna drop some Williams on an intake go with S&B IMHO

Re: Whats the best Intake for the duramax??
I have stock air box, the turbo can only fit so much air in to begin with. Unless you got a huge turbo a air box or air intake does nothing. It's like trying to get more water through a little garden hose. It can only handle so much at a time. The CFM is probably maxed to begin with.

Re: Whats the best Intake for the duramax??
OK, this is a repost, but judging by the responses on using a K&N filter, it's apparently needed:

Re: Whats the best Intake for the duramax??
I would recommend a new air intake on any '01-'05 Duramax LB7 and LLY. These models have the older style flat filters and airboxes. I have not been as happy with results from these as I have been with the '06 and up style air boxes. The '06 and up style is fine with the PPE Airbox mod for up to 500rwhp. As far as intakes, I recommend AEM brute force or the AFE pro dry. I do prefer dry filters compared to oiled myself.

Re: Whats the best Intake for the duramax??
Well guys I went out and bought the K&N drop in filter from Autozone, cost me $64.33 with the cleaning kit. Not bad compared to $230 bucks that it was going to cost me for the S&B and even more for the banks. Thanks guys!!
Any word on the "Throttle body spacer from jcwhitney"?? |

read my first post. there is no throttle body on your duramax. sadly though i did a search and these things do actually exist but all they are is a piece of aluminum tube that goes in the charge pipe. dont waste your money, theres no way it could help anything, i did find one guy on duramax forum that insatlled one and he said it restricted the pipe and he lost 2MPG's http://www.duramaxforum.com/forum/01...dy-spacer.html heres the "throttle body spacer" what a joke! http://www.autotrucktoys.com/chevy_s...0778C7015.aspx ![]() 03 GMC 2500 HD crew duramax, 6" full traction lift.

Throttle body spacers aren't all that great. Back when engines were carburated. Thats when you seen a difference. But I believe half the people who slap these onto their engine get a lead foot and swear it's got more horsepower. I once told my wife she got a new air filter and she said it almost doubled in horsepower. I watched her fuel mileage and it dropped like a rock because she was lead footing it all the time. Some of that stuff, if it really worked that great. The gm factory plant would be installing them at the factory. Same with the tornado. If it really worked, cars would have it from the factory because these companies spend millions just in testing. Thats my 3 cents.

no prob, in my post i did say that "he said" kind of as a disclaimer so people could tell that it was one guys opinion and not a proven fact or anything cause i feel the same way as you about false info that gets tossed around im just assuming he looked at it and saw that the inside diameter was smaller than the ID of the pipe it was being connected to which makes sense if it slides into the pipe. so if its going from a bigger ID (stock charge pipe) to a smaller one (spacer) before it gets to the engine then it seems like the flow would be restricted. either way, extending the charge pipe like that thing does isnt going to do anything, think about it this way, the turbo controls how much air goes into the engine, more boost means more air going in so if it doesnt increase the boost then you wont see any power increase. ![]() 03 GMC 2500 HD crew duramax, 6" full traction lift.

Honestly, there is no need for more than the stock airbox on an LBZ (those are the only tests I have seen). The LBZ box flows better than previous gen duramax's. Just cut out the fins before you install it. Several of my buddies have picked up a LBZ Duramax airbox on ebay for $10 or so.
