Educate me on the duramax 2004-2008 etc?
I'm looking into buying a 2004-2008 chevrolet with the duramax? My questions are what is there to know about the duramax? What year models are better than other? What to stay away from. I have had nothing but chevrolet (gas), never a duramax. I currently drive a 06 f-250 (company truck)with the powerstroke and love the durability. My vehicles are a 2008 GMC 1500 Z71 4x4, 1987 Chevrolet 1500 4x4 and a 2002 Camaro LS1.

I have a 2004 for sale ;) The 2004-2005s can sometimes get hot (engine temp) when towing heavy loads. The 2001-2003's are the engines that experienced injector problems. And I dont think there are any issues yet with the newer ones. Good luck and you will love these trucks once you pick one up the power is amazing

2006 and early 2007 were (IMHO) the best years. No reported injector problems, no over heating prooblems, highest factory rated HP/Torque (with the LBZ engine), 6 speed Allison (vs 5 speed in earlier trucks) and they don't have the regeneration system found on later models.

try a search and look through some old threads cause theres been a lot of them on this topic, you'll find a lot of answers. and the injectors on the 01-03's are covered by GM up to 200K.

LBZ is the best IMO, slightly less mpg's than the earlier models, but more power, and less reported problems. I would stay away from the brand new 07.5-08's. They have the dumb dpf which restricts the exhaust terribly, and causes horrible mileage. Unless you do a straight pipe and a tuner on an 08 they'll get pretty bad mileage. I'm going to be buyin a 06-07 LBZ dmax come may and I graduate from college.

The lb7s get the best gas mileage but have injector problems. I drive an 06 lbz which gets slightly less mpgs than the lb7 stock but has way more power and with a good tune from efi live i can get 18 or so in the city.

Re: Educate me on the duramax 2004-2008 etc?
They are all good motors IMO, but like others have said the 01-04 LB7s had injector issues, but are covered up to 200k. The 04.5 to 05 LLYs are having some overheating problems, but they can be addressed and its not all of them. I've never came close with mine and have towed pretty heavy at times. I've never worked on the LBZs or LMMs like I have with the LB7s and LLYs, but everything I hear is good, just remove the DPF on the LMMs and you'll be fine.

Alot depends on what you want to do with the truck. Small tune or full build? For a mild tune I'd stick with LLY or LBZ due to the VVT turbo and a little more to play with tuning wise. If you are planning a full build, its up to you since most everything gets replaced anyways.

Yeah, in stock form and with the correct supporting mods, any of the dmax motors will hold 500hp all day long with no problems. Once you get above that though, your on borrowed time, unless you really know what your doing.
