'09 Duramax
I've been driving this Silverado LT 2500HD Ext Duramax/Allison around for a week now and really like it. It's got under 6500 miles on it and I can probably pick it up for under $42K.
Here in Canada they list at $61K and are presently selling new for $50K-$51K.
Decent price or not?
The 6.6L has really good power and is quiet and the Allison 6 speed is pretty sweet too. Not what I recall of diesels like my buddy's '00 5.9L Cummins Dodge.

The old 12 valve had a nice diesel rattle to it. The 24 valve was just obnoxious. Most of the time you have to shut them off to talk over it at idle, and its not the exhaust thats doing it, just the sound of compression ignited injection doing it. The later 5.9s and the 6.7 are fairly quiet but sound like poo.
The duramax is quiet because of pilot injection. Basically it shoots a small amount of diesel in to start the ignition process before a big blast of the correct amount of fuel needed.
The biggest problem we are seeing with the 07.5+ diesels are the wrong air filters being used and attempts to change the exhaust/do away with the particulant filter or the filter plugging up do to too much idling, mostly oil field guys. The air filter deal is simple, use a AC Delco filter and you won't have any issues. Aftermarket replacement filters seem to not filter as good and let too much air in and it sets a mass air performance code, usually at idle. If I ever had one I would do something about that elephant dick tip though. You could easily get a polished stainless tip, 5 inches or so, and clamp it onto the tail pipe and then put some vent holes in it so it would pull in outside air to cool down the tail pipe temps during regen.

I agree! That megaphone looking thing just doesn't look good. Like you said it's probably shaped like that to create a venturi effect and pull in outside air to keep the end cool.
I'm sure that can be changed into something 6" in dia and polished stainless steel.

There is no probably about it, it was made that way to cool the exhaust down as it exits the system. Ford has a very nice looking dual dip setup that serves the same purpose only its polished stainless and actually looks good.

Re: '09 Duramax
Its a nice truck, a DPF delete and a good tuner and you will be happy with it.

Re: '09 Duramax
Yeah first thing you should do after you buy it is to get rid of the DPF and the horrendus looking tip. then get a tuner...

The cummins motor uses pilot injection from 03 on up also.
