09 Duramax MPG's

My boss is getting around 18.5 mpg with his Duramax on the highway and im getting 22-24mpg on the highway with our shop truck which is an 06 ram dually. He wants to boost the fuel mileage up on his truck so i am wanting facts and opinions on the best combinations of induction, exhaust, and programming.

Re: 09 Duramax MPG's

Lots of good info here.
IMO a 4" exhaust would work fine 5" if you really wanna make some power. But definately get rid of the DPF.
EFILive for programming or you could use some handheld tuner but EFILive is best
I'm not sure if you even need to do an intake the nbs dmaxes had good intakes. I have had good luck with Volant if you really want one.

By the way if this is like a work truck or something you dont want to highly modify, then go with a mild hp/torque gain or stuff will break.

Good Luck

Re: 09 Duramax MPG's

its my boss's personal truck so it doesnt do much heavy hauling other than his camper which might be 2-4 times a year and not very far. He isnt worried about getting more power just wants to get better mpg's, we have the dodge for hauling.
how does EFILive work? is it complicated?

Re: 09 Duramax MPG's

I would say get a tuner, and get a 4 or 5" turbo back exhuast and do the PPE airbox mod (Free).... This will get you probably 2-4mpg depending on tune you get... I was getting about 22.5 in my truck when it as stock height....

Wow. Not to hijack, but if you bought a truck you don't need 315 HP and 0-60 in the blink of eye...though it is nice :). But more than anything you want torque. Being able to afford to feed it is nice too. They should be making half tons in diesels...

Re: 09 Duramax MPG's

PPE has a web site they sell tuners but have a how to on modding the air box for better flow. EFI is way more in depth then what you need. Get a PPE or quadzilla that can delete the DPF. Of coarse the warranty is going to be void after the mods and not everyone is gaining 2-4 MPG.

Re: 09 Duramax MPG's

Ya I would wait till the warranty is up rather than voiding it for a few mpgs.

Last I heard GM dropped this idea after they filed for bankruptcy, unless somebody's heard different.

Re: 09 Duramax MPG's

Ya but thats generally because of there speed, over sized tires, or winter fuel.

Re: 09 Duramax MPG's

No, no and no. Stock tires, 55-70 mph and standard fuel. It is a MAJOR complaint that the newer diesels, not just the duramax, get terrible fuel milage compaired to the older motors.
