Question Powdercoating stock wheels?
I will be having my stock wheels powdercaoted within the next week and I have a couple questions. Does the clear coating on the aluminum need to come off the wheel for the powercoating to stick better? The powdercoating guy say's no, is that right, I thought you would have to sand blast them first... Also, how does $30 bucks a wheel sound? That seems like a good price

Re: Powdercoating stock wheels?
I've heard the same thing, no need to remove it. Also $30 is pretty good per wheel. I found a guy local to me who was going to do it for $25, but that was me bringing him the wheels without the tires. If he's going to break them down, and finish them, thats a good price.

Re: Powdercoating stock wheels?
My powdercoat guy said the coating absolutely had to come off...and sandblasting didnt touch the coating on my H2 wheels. they had to be sent out for a molten salt dip.

Re: Powdercoating stock wheels?
if he did powdercoat over the clear the powdercoat will only have an adhesion as strong as the coating underneath. and with powdercoating you have to heat up the metal to make the powder stick. then put it back in the oven to turn the powder into paint and i am not sure how that would effect the coating. i used to powdercoat aircraft parts in cali and we had to make sure we had a very clean surface for good adhesion. do a little more research so you don't get screwed later on down the road.

Re: Powdercoating stock wheels?
id say remove it for better adheasion. it just makes sense that it wouldnt stick as good w/ it than w/o it.

Removing the coating sounds like a great idea. So sandblasting won't work? Whats the cost for the salt bath?

isnt there a plastic media for blasting thats non invaisive?
...pretty shure there is...basicly it just takes paint ect off and leaves metal alone

Well, I know paint would not be a problem, but that poly coating chit is very durable

Re: Powdercoating stock wheels?
My guy used a chemical stripper to get the clearcoat off of the GMC stockers, then blasted it with plastic media. If the clearcoat isn't removed, when they are heated up it will burn/melt.

If he thinks you can put powder over clearcoat then I'd find another guy, he sounds clueless.

Here are mine before and after:

Re: Powdercoating stock wheels?
$60 a wheel sounds pretty good to me.

Think about it..if I was stripping, blasting then powdercoating wheels I wouldn't do them for less than $100 a wheel, wouldn't be worth my time IMO, how someone could do them for $30/wheel amazes me.. guess I'll never do any powdercoating..haha

Is that what they charged you?

I have been contemplating getting my factory 20's powdercoated gloss black, but I wasnt sure of the price.

Re: Powdercoating stock wheels?
He did 6 wheels for me, asked for $540, I gave him an extra $10, making it $550. Originally he quoted me $100/wheel.

Re: Powdercoating stock wheels?
Well..if you do the stockers the chance of seeing other powdercoated ones is very, very slim, chance of seeing other identical aftermarket wheels is probable. I like to be different.

a good powdercoat job wont budge with sandblasting, and if you turn up the blast enough to get off the powdercoat, you begin to damage the metal underneath.

the salt dip was $100 for 5 wheels.
