repainting 94 chevy stepside
Hi, I'm repainting my 94 Chevrolet and i was wondering about how far down i should take the paint too and the system of paint that would be the best for it. Do i need to take off all the clearcoat and then prime it? What primer and was the orignal paint bc/cc? Thanks for all the help I'm doing this all by myself for the first time and the only experience i have painting is helping my dad paint wheat trucks on the farm.

the original paint is bc/cc. how many times has the truck been painted, is any of the paint flaking or peeling?

if its original paint in good shape & doesnt need any body work. DA the clear with 220 & then wetsand it with 400. spray sealer, base, then clear.

Ya, if the original paint job is ok then you can really wetsand with some 600 grit on a block.Knocking the clearcoat down to a dull finish. It's easiest to do the large flat areas this way,use a little Ivory soap as a lubricant and change the paper often.Try to keep going through the clear to a minimum. After that I use a Scotch Brite pad and Finalsand paste(Comet will work as well)and go around making sure you get all the edges and tight areas you couldn't properly get with the sandpaper. When it's all done it should be completely dull NO SHINY SPOTS.If you have problem areas(like peeling)use a sander or a block with some 220 and feather the edges back till the paint stops flaking. Then sand like the rest of the truck. As, for the paint system you can use either a BC\CC or a single stage. That's merely preference.Good luck!
