what should i do?
ok my 79 has some rust problems, like every truck out there! mine has some holes around the tire arches on the outside of both sides, very small holes tho. but the lower bed of both sides in front of the tire arch, have a pretty big hole in them. but im not sure on the whole "bondo" thing, ive heard nothin but bad things on it. i dont know if i should get sheetmetal and fill the holes or use bondo? or maybe a little of both? metal for the big holes and bondo for the small?? any opinions?

The only long lasting way to fix rust is to cut out the rusty metal and replace it. You can buy any patch panels for your truck that you want from LMC and other parts companies.

Re: what should i do?
I would advise you to patch with metal, that's the only sure fire fix for rust.Covering it in bondo is a temporary fix, eventually it'll fail because of the exposure to the elements from the holes and the preexisting rust.Of course your repair will most likely need some bondo. If done right it will need very little.Bondo gets a bad rap because it is used haphazardly(i.e:using it to fill 2 inch deep dents rather than pulling the dent out first and using the bondo to fill only the minor imperfections left behind.)Bondo was merely intended to be a time saver for production bodyshops over the alternative, lead, not a cure all.The other reason Bondo gets negative publicity is that anything with the word "BONDO" on the can sucks. If you use a production based plastic filler from any automotive paint supplier, you will have much better results.Bondo brand plastic filler is 60's technology at work, and has been vastly improved by other companies.
