Re: Rear View Mirror

Just finished installing mine, here are some pics:

After I pulled the wires I used heat shrink tubing for a clean install

I then wired the plug and used a heat gun to shrink the tubing

I ran the wires thru the firewall into a wire loom to conceal the wires then I mounted the temp sensor next to the horn. I also made sure the sensor wasn't in the direct wind flow but in a position to get a constant wind flow for a correct reading.

Finished

Re: Rear View Mirror

I just purchased a mirror out of a 99 Escalade, but says it also fits 99-02 Chevy trucks. It looks idenical to the one directly above. I would like to purchase a new sensor and connector for this mirror. Does anyone have the exact part# for the stuff I'll need? There is about 3 different part numbers for the sensor, and 3 different for the connector. I just want to make sure I get the right stuff the first time.

Thanks,

Kyle

Re: Rear View Mirror

I have a rear view mirror from a 2004 Tahoe and plan to put it in my 1997 Silverado. I don't have an overhead console so I figure I will be hardwiring it in which shouldn't be a problem. It has a compass, temp and air bag on/off. The wiring harness is a 16 pin position utilizing 9 wires and the wire position and colors are as follows:

1. blank
2. blank
3. solid blue
4. solid green
5. solid gray
6. green w/ white stripe
7. dark gray w/white stripe
8. solid black
9. solid light green
10. blank
11. blank
12. blank
13. solid yellow
14. blank
15. blank
16. solid pink

I have searched for the correct wiring diagram but I have found some conflicting information so I figured here would be my best bet. I don't want to smoke this thing! All help would be appreciated!

Re: Rear View Mirror

I just grabbed a mirror from a 95 Ukon. It just has "OFF M C/M". So no temp for me. I pulled down the headliner and got all of the wiring harness. But it only has 2 wire's in the 7 pin connector. So does this mean that the Yukon it came out of never had the wire going to the reverse light for the cancel auto dim in reverse. I would think this would be a saftey issue. I would like to have it. Where would be the best place to tap into the reverse wire. Thank's.

Re: Rear View Mirror

Well... I finally got everything to put my new mirror in. Mirror out of 99 Escalade with 16pin connector. Bought a 16pin connector off ebay with only 4 wires in it. 2 wires are for the temp sensor, 1 for 12v Ignition, and the last the ground. Bought a new temp sensor with 16' of wire and connector.

I got to looking at my current mirror in the truck. It has the 7 pin flat connector. In that connector there is 3 wires. A white, black, and a green if I remember correctly. Could anyone tell me what those 3 wires are, so that it might help speed my installation up.

Thanks!

IIRC the black and green go to the temp sensor and the white is for reverse (it doesnt dim the mirror when you put it in reverse. I didnt wire this feature when I had my GMT-400 it just never made a difference to me).

Re: Rear View Mirror

Well.... those are the only 3 wires that are currently in the truck.... and the mirror thats in there now is a compass only mirror. So... I'm guessing one of those wires has to be a switched 12v, one a ground, and dunno what the 3rd would be for.

Re: Rear View Mirror

I'm in the middle of my install...... Just wondering where the ambient air temp sensor was mounted from the factory? I can't find a place where it should go, or would work best. If someone could let me know ASAP so I can get back to my install..... Thanks,

Kyle

Re: Rear View Mirror

Typical location was: anchored to lower corner on driver's side of A/C condensor's mount. Factory bracket put sensor tip slightly ahead of condensor (at least on mine).

Re: Rear View Mirror

Cool, thanks guys. I will give that a whirl. I just didnt know the best place to keep it out of direct wind, but yet provide a good signal.

Re: Rear View Mirror

well the wind doesnt effect it much. mines right in the opening of my grill and its still pretty accurate to within a degree or two.

Re: Rear View Mirror

Well, I got everything all hooked up... Spliced the new 16 prong plug on for my new mirror. The new harness only came with 4 wires on it. Hot, Ground, and 2 wires for the temp sensor.

Here is where I have the problem. I hooked up the hot to hot, ground to ground, and then the 2 temp sensor wires. That left my reverse default or whatever you call it wire unhooked. I just taped it up, and left it up in the console.

Now, when I put the truck in reverse, the mirror goes completely blank, no direction or temp displayed. So.... can I just tie in that reverse wire to the ignition hot? I could care less whether it doesnt dim when I go to reverse.

Also... I noticed that if I push the compass button it shuts the whole display off..... push it again, it all comes on. Likewise, if I push the Temp button, the display goes competely out.

So.... what do you all think?

Re: Rear View Mirror

well if you didnt hook up the reverse wire then the dim feature should just dim like normal all the time.
i only hooked up the 4wires myself with no problems. i dont care if it turns off the auto dim when i back up. but the dim feature still works when it gets dark... it does depend if there is light from the cars behind your headlights dimming the mirror. maybe your reverse lights are just bright enough to make the mirror think a car is behind ya...

but yes you hit the compass or temp button and the display goes out.
IMO kinda dumb putting in the 2 seperate buttons on a dual display mirror.LOL now i can understand it with the older single display mirrors because you have to push the button to go to the other.

Re: Rear View Mirror

Yeah, I could care less about the dimming, lol.

I just wanna know why when I physically put the truck in reverse the display of the compass and temp goes completely black, but then when it goes into Neutral, Drive, 2 or 1 it comes back on..... but as soon as you go to reverse again it goes black.

Re: Rear View Mirror

well thats odd if you didnt hook up the reverse wire to anything....
maybe put your finger over the rear facing light sensor and see if that changes anything... and visversa with a flashlight.
it shouldnt dim when you have light infront of the mirror, but should dim when the front is dark and the rear has light.

might just want to check your wiring maybe. but i got no idea why it would dim with reverse with it not hooked up.

Re: Rear View Mirror

The actual mirror doesnt dim... The little display that says what direction your going and the temp goes blank when you go in reverse. The readings go completely away. Then as soon as you go back to park or drive it comes back. I dont get it.
