Re: Rear View Mirror
Do you HAVE to tap into the reverse light wire ? I had planned on using one of these mirrors in my '56 Belair

you only need to connect the reverse wire if you want to defeat the "shading" when a car approaches(or extra light from your house, etc.). If you don't hook up the reverse defeat wire, connect it to ground.

Re: Rear View Mirror
Hooking up the wire to your reverse lights only serves one purpose...
When you put the car in reverse it turns the auto dim off when you are backing up. I know a lot of people have installed the mirrors and not connected this wire. lowdown ![]() 1988 Chevy Silverado Stepside - 4/6 drop, Katzkin Leather Click on signature for truck pics and specs. http://www.koolcartoons.com |

Great !, thanks for all of the info. I was wondering what all was involved in installing one of these mirrors in an older car. I might even put one in my '65 project truck then

Re: Rear View Mirror
I have a 92 GMC. I bought an auto dim mirror and I am needing the wiring.
From the picture I need Temp Sensor(probe), the Connector, and the Main Harness. Right? When I bought the rear view mirror it was left with six-inch wiring. Can I work with that and make my own harness and buy the probe and connector? What did you guys who didn't have auto dim mirrors do? I think I can wire it from past discussions. |

Hey 1999Silverado, I have a 92 GMC and I just bought a rear view mirror with comp and Temp. Do I just get the Temp Sensor and Pigtail for it to work? Thank you in advance

Re: Rear View Mirror
Well, yes and no. You'll need the sensor and mount it in front of the radiator. With the 99-02 trucks they have a transmission cooler up front (typically the ones with the towing option) that is where the sensor is secured. You'll have to find a place to mount it. Connect the pigtail and then run 18 gauge wire (I wrap mine in 1/4" conduit) back through the firewall, up and over to the mirror.
Does it have a 7 pin connector on the back of the mirror? You'll need the connector and wiring (mirror pigtail) to wire everything in. I bought one off of eBay that came with the pigtail (had all 7 wires) - my truck already had the wiring harness tucked up in the headliner but it only had 3 wires instead of the 5 I needed. I took out a couple of leads from the old pigtail and put them in the one that was in the truck and connected my temp sensor that way. Last edited by 1999Silverado : 08-02-2005 at 02:19 PM. |

Re: Rear View Mirror
I bought the mirror on ebay and it came with a six inch plug, where the 7 wires go. So far thats what I have. They say just buy the Temp Sensor and the Connector and thats it. But I'm still confused.
GMC '92 Sierra NO wiring, just comp and temp mirror with the I guess the six inch pigtail coming out of it. What do I need???? |
