They said it came out of a 2000 Suburban.
It has Outside Temp and Compass. It was a piece of cake to install. I went to the Chevy Dealership and bought the temp sensor (I think it cost me about 13.00) and mounted it up front of the grille.
If you decide to go that route there is a thread here somewhere with the wiring instructions.
You will need to run a wire from the sensor to the mirror.
A wire to a power source
A ground
and there is a wire that goes to your reverse lights to cancel the auto dim feature when backing up.

The compass is integrated, just needs power.
The compass has to be set for your area and then it callibrates itself by driving around.
I can dig up the link for setting it up, it's not hard at all.

Re: Rear View Mirror
I read the whole post from the beginning...... I guess I'll buy the Temp sensor and the connector and worry about the rest when it gets to me. Thanks for helping me see the light. No pun intended.

I called a dealer to order this and was told it was a connector for a crank sensor. He did some back tracking and found the connector needed for a mirror with temp/comp from a 2000 Denali. Part #15306078. Just about crapped myself when he quoted $96 Cad. Still looking for a used one.

Re: Rear View Mirror
To be honest. From all the mirrors I have seen. I have yet to see one that has an accurate temperature reading. Every one I have ever seen is almost 10 degrees off or more. In my opinion, the only thing I think is handy on these mirrors is the compass. Very nice to have.
But as for that temperature part of it. Its not even worth the hassle. Seems they are always quite a bit off.

Hmmm... dont know what to make of that... I just ordered it from my local dealer and we verified that the correct number is 12101856 - he showed me the sensor and connector right on the computer screen. He looked it up for a 2000 Silverado if that makes a difference...

Mine is spot-on (according to the news radio stations, who utilize the Phoenix airport temp equipment), and I live in the downtown area.
In Arizona, there's quite the variety of temperature variants (between summer and winter and depending on your region).
In the winter my “ICE” indicator sometimes comes on, but I think it does automagically when the mirror temp sensor reaches 42* or lower (at least that’s what I’ve noticed anyway).
Maybe your temp sensor is bad, dirty or is incorrectly placed.

Re: Rear View Mirror
i installed a comp/temp mirror tonight on my 99 sierra. i had the harness up in the headliner. i bought the mirror(with 5 inchs of pigtail) and a temp probe(without connector) on ebay. i sodered wires to the temp probe connectors and filled the sucker with glue and installed the probe under the body (it seemed easier and faster). well i took a guess on wiring the sucker up, and after blowing a fuse, i got it working.
when i first started it up, the temp read 86, which seemed pretty accurate. then it went down to 77, then up to 90, then i noticed if i shine a flashlight at it, it either drops down to 58, or jumps of to 112. so yea, it seems like the rear light sensor is affecting my temp reading. i got a midterm tomorrow, so i called it a night on that project, but im hoping its a mixed up wire, and not a bad mirror, or i fried the probe when i sodered it.

Re: Rear View Mirror
My '05 Chevy Mirror didn't come with the Dim, Compass and Temp. I would like to add a mirror to it. It is a Windshield mount mirror. I also noticed that most of the used ones only come with 6" Pigtails. Will that short of wires be a problem?
I don't know as to weather the wiring is in the headliner or Not, and what wiring is in place to the sensor. But I will be adding cab running lights, and a console. I would like to install a Long console with homelink.
I would like to get this all done at once as I have to drop the headliner for the Running Lights.
Anyone with a guess as to what wiring I might have? I bought the plane Jane Dmax, because that was the only one I could find with a Reg. cab, and 8' Box 4x4. Now the upgrades will have to be done.
Thank You,
Rick

Re: Rear View Mirror
Am I correct in that you only have to connect a hot, ground, and 2 sensor wires (unless you want the reverse switch wired) connected? I installed my mirror last week and I swear I don't think its auto dimming, could my back tinted glass make the difference? It has the comt/temp switch on the front with a hole on the right of the temp switch and a hole on the left. It also has a hole on the backside of the mirror. I guessing that these are sensors. Does it dim from receiving light from oncoming traffic or from traffic following?

Re: Rear View Mirror
the best way to figure out if auto dim is working is to cover up the sensor on the back of the mirror (fat finger will work), then shine a light on the mirror side. You should see it darken at this point.

Re: Rear View Mirror
I know this thread has been going on for a while. I put a temp./compass/auto dim mirror in my '98 Z. The plug I got only had three wires. I ran a hot and ground and got the compass to work. I've acquired the correct 7 wire plug and I think by reading all of the posts I've got the wiring figured out.
What I don't know is where the B.U. wire or circuit is and where the best place to tie into it. Am I correct if you don't hook up the B.U. wire, it needs to tie to the ground or the auto dim will not work?
Thanks
Rob

Re: Rear View Mirror
okay one answer at a time. rsz71, look in the kickpanel on the driverside of the truck. This is where I found the wire in my truck, although I had to re-wire that part due to corrosion, so my colors don't necessarily match. Ground the wire if you don't care if backup defeat works. POR2GZO, do you know if the mirror had temp function before? You can not add it if the mirror was not already capable. If you can confirm the number of pins in the connector, I will let you know what the pind are that you need to tie into. Actually everyone, here is a picture I borrowed from another forum for Onstar info. It details the part number and pinout for the 16 pin connector.
