console lid creaks and squeaks

On my 99 even if I so much as look at the console it starts creaking and squeaking. A lot of it is coming from the flip up note pad holder thing which I think is about useless anyway but when I rest my arm on the console the whole lid creaks too. I don't see any way of taking it apart. I was thinking if I could maybe I could line the edges with foam or rubber or something to keep it from making so much noise. Also at the back its got that 12,000 pound test spring to hold the lid open that doesn't hold the lid open and its started to crack the hinges because of that stupid spring. Is there anyway to take the lid clear off and do away with that spring and maybe stop some of these creaks and squeaks?

If I could find a nice one for a reasonble price I'd just put a full length console in it.
