hey, ive heard many people get estimates from body shops, if they took it off and sanded it themselves, also the automotive paint, i tried some krylon fusion on some other pieces, but i dont like how it turned out, if this is easily done(self) than that would be cool, but what would be an estimate for 2 colors(red&black) for all the interior plastic pieces of a 2dr 97

LS6TT: Good pricing on paints. I would love to see pics of the finished product.

Carnios: The look between the Krylon and actually doing the sanding and automotive paint is a big difference. Some people like the Krylon look while others dont. I am not positive on an estimate, but its not cheap because the sanding is very involved. Its not like a panel of a truck or something where you take a rotary sander to it. You can do that on some pieces, but mainly its all hand sanding. Thats just a lot of hours not to mention the whole removal of the dash isnt exactly a cake walk. The man hours alone on the thing is killer thats why I suggested doing most the prep work yourself and then taking it in. For them to spray it is a couple hours labor and the price of paint. I wouldnt even know where to start with a quote because we have only done them on our show cars and we arent really a paint shop so we dont market it. Just call around and see... I wouldnt be surprised if some of the more popular paint shops in your area had already done a few and could give a quote on the phone. Best of luck!

P.S. Two-tone paint pricing doesnt differ a ton unless they are rare colors. You'll probably pay 50-100 more for the second color since they have to spend a bit more time finding and mixing another paint.

i am thinking about painntiny my interior on my truck it is an 88 chevy silverado. Exactly how hard is it to get the dash out and do i need any special tools to get it out and where should i start.
I am new to this site i have checked it for a while but finally joined

bnp85: Unfortunately I havent ripped the dash out of an 85 or older truck. In fact, I havent even taken a dash out of a Chevy truck yet so hopefully someone else can answer this for you. I know its quite a bit of work and lots of bolts and screws to keep track of, but its definitely doable.

so on my 01' door switch panels and where the inside door handle piece is I should sand with 100-200 grit? Thanx

Start with something kinna rough... 100 would be fine. Work your way up to say 200 grit until it is fairly smooth but still has plenty of roughness to it. After you spray it the first time come back and wet sand it with 200 grit and then spray again. Eventually you will get it nice and glassy smooth for some clear coat. Once that goes on you need to wet sand again and buff. That should bring out the bling bling.

I've tried Dupli color and it sux. I prepped my door panels like he said and short cutted with the spray paint and about three months the stuff was peeling.

I'd prefer the flat mat look or minimal shine, not like the shiny blue from ur sponser.

I was wondering if it's the clear coat that's makin it shiny? or is it the Automotive paint?

Automotive paint will be flat no matter what without the clear coat. It will look a lot better than rattle can spray paint, but it will still be a flat color. The clear coat brings out the bling bling in the paint.

Here is an update on my sponsors car... it was completed by Anthony Haydon (our sponsor and owner of the vehicle) and Malibu Paint and Body. Both are located in Knoxville, TN. If anyone is in Knoxville and needs some work done to their vehicle... I would definitely recommend Malibu.




The paint in the pictures does not do it justice. Its mainly because its an overcast day when the pictures were taken. The paint changes from the maroonish color you see to a bright candy red. Its a new paint called Charizma which I believe either just got released or isnt available on the market.

i started the painting process on my dash this week and i used a fairly different method. after i got my dash out i scotchbrited it and sprayed plastic adhesion promoter on it from dupont. after that i used a highbuild primer (z chrome) it filled all of the texture and sands out really smooth. also for the vinyl you can rough it with 80 grit and spray z chrome on it or put fiberglass resin with hardner in it and that should make it hard as a rock. i will post pics when im done.

I have to say that is one incredible looking interior. I have to ask the details for the door though, because I already have many ideas on the dash, and your guide helped tremendously, which I thank you for. Please, if you could, on that same truck, what could you do with the door panels to match the rest of the dash?? The grab handles on the door, are they plastic or not?? I would like a guide to just the door panels, but I know you are probably very busy. If you could, it would be greatly appreciated. By the way, on a regular cab pickup, would you recommend painting all the trim all the way around?? I am talking about the plastic pieces that trim your headliner, and the piece that runs through behind the seat, right below the back glass, that trim, paint it to match everything else as well?? Thanks man.

Not only that, but its a protective coating for the color as well. It seals the color and provides UV resistance as well.

J1-Customz: Thanks for the compliments. The way those doors were done was fiberglass. The doors were actually lined with a thin layer of fiberglass so that it would create the best type of paint surface it could. The small plastic pieces on the door were sanded and painted like I described above. The whole car is in automotive paint except for the seats, carpet, and headliner (and maybe other parts I cant think of at the moment). I would definitely recommend doing all the trim in the interior if you are going to do it, otherwise you will have two different materials in the vehicle. Cleared, smooth automotive paint and hard, textured plastics. Its better to make it all the same type of materials.

It's a 5/8 drop using all DJM components. There are more pics of it in my gallery. All my interior pieces are getting painted this week, Hawaiian Orchid Metallic to match my striping on the exterior paint.
