Man, your truck is gorgeous. By the way, do you think I would be able to get away with a set of 20x9.0 wheels with 275/45/R20 and a 4/6 drop on a '96 regular cab Silverado without rubbing?? Are your tires 255/35?? Thanks

I dont remember the exact write up said but I believe I went threw 2 methods of painting the dash. One of them was with a vinyl dye spray and the other with automotive paint. Primer and flex agent would be used with the automotive paint method whereas the vinyl dye spray wouldnt nessecarily need to be primered. Basically the automotive paint method is just removing pieces and then painting them like a paint shop would paint them. The Vinyl Dye Spray (rattle can) method is a less permanent fix and takes quite a bit less skill to get good results.

Yeah if you have a soft vinyl dash, which most Chevy's dont, you can still used this process. You will want to make sure to buy flex agent though and mix it in as nessecary. It will help a lot.

Im in the process of painting parts of my truck. Im using an adhesion promotor (2 coats), primer (3-4 Coats). I have the Paint in spray cans directly from GM.. matches the dark green metallic to the tee (3 coats) then im adding 2-3 coats of clear. Right now im just getting ready to sand the 2nd to last coat of the Paint, to smooth it out.. add one more light coat to cover everything.. then clear them. I can not stress it enough.. the prep work is vital. I have quite a few hours in sanding and smoothing it out. The texture in the interior peices are a pain, but its amazing looking at the peices nice and smooth. Take your time when doing it. I will see if i can get a few pictures..

James is completely correct. In painting things, the biggest part is prep work. If you prep a surface right even if you are a crappy painter it will come out lookin pretty damn good. Flex Agent can be had at any paint supply shop. Paint supply shop does not mean Home Depot or any place like that. Look in your yellow pages for Automotive Paint Supply and go talk to them. They should be able to help ya out with it.

Haha... well that is the one issue that you can run into. The sunlight can create quite a glare if it hits it in the right spot. Anyways the only thing I can suggest is sunglasses or something to cover the dash. You could recover it in vinyl but that might defeat the whole purpose. Oh... if its just a show vehicle you could get one of those carpet covers and put it over the dash when you are cruising.

lol thats a good photoshop work. any ways i started out on my truck i started out with the plastic peices. i sanded it down to black where there was no bump. then sanded 120.220,320 then 400 then i primed it i got some pics on my phone ill post some pics then when i get a chance. then i started on the gauge peice thing. this peice is a pain to sand. so im takin a break.

I have heard of fiberglassing over the soft vinyl and then painting, but never seen anyone get good results by painting on the vinyl itself. Not even sure if its possible, but I am not paint expert. I would suggest removing the vinyl altogether and fiberglassing though. You will have hard layers for reinforcing the painting surface instead of a layer of paint then a layer of fiberglass and then soft vinyl and then hard cardboard or plastic. It would be best to remove the factory vinyl if possible.

If you are going to use automotive paint with clear coat then there really isnt a way to cut down the glare if you have any. The only way I can think of painting the dash without getting the glare would be not to clear the paint so you have more of a flat color.

Re: Painting Interior Pieces Guide (hopefully)

dumm...i got an idea for if you clear it, throw a cover over the dash to reduce the glare and when you show, just pull the cover off and bam! it looks great and is protected from fading.
