Re: Painting Interior Pieces Guide (hopefully)
I am replacing a broken dash piece with a new one. The problem is the new one is for a gray interior and mine is tan. Can I just get interior paint from the dealership and just spray it on without any prep?

Re: Painting Interior Pieces Guide (hopefully)
I would suggest ordering the right color from the dealership if they have it, but if that isnt a possibility then just prep the surface with a good cleaning and try spraying it. The spray dye is pretty hard to get a good bond so in my experience it has always come off especially on new plastics. I dont think the dealership carries the spray dye, but I have never tried so I am not sure.

Question Re: Painting Interior Pieces Guide (hopefully)
Here is something that has always been a challenge for me. GM interior color codes....This is not about painting, it's about finding the right color pairs.

I've been repainting interior parts for years using Dupot Vinyl paint. GM provides a color code like 24 for the Dark Blue in my 91 K1500. The problem is that code 24 is *two* colors. A dark and a darker. My code is 24C for the cloth trim and 24I for the color combination.

So, what two colors are 24I? If you look at the PPG charts for 91, there are 24CN, 24DN, and 24EN. Sure, it's all code 24 but which pair?

I've run into this with many other color pairs (62, 64, 66 79). In the end I have to get samples of the three (or sometimes more) and figure it out.

The color chips aren't good enough to use for comparison especially when the colors are "somewhat dark blue", "kinda dark blue", "dark blue", "really dark blue" and "darker than the first dark blue"....

If you go to the dealer they will tell you "it's 24". Thanks. No one at GM could tell me either. I think this is one of the secrets that keeps GM in power.

So, has anyone figured out a way to nail down the color pair from the single code without buying a sample of the paint? The paint store I frequent is great about helping but in the end it's a test and match. It shouldn'y have to be that way.

Re: Painting Interior Pieces Guide (hopefully)
well my codes where ALL MESSED UP! cause NONE of the codes on the glovebox door where right for colors, exterior or interior
best thing to do is take it to them and show em, if they sell a decent amount of it then they should know from looken at the dash what color would match ;)

Re: Painting Interior Pieces Guide (hopefully)
The problem with GM vehicles is that they are cheaply made and GM likes to out source everything they can. That means you have some plastic company in say Virginia making the plastic bezel pieces and another company in Florida making the plastic piece that the window controls sit in.

The problem with this is that by the time you get done you have a dozen different shades of gray in the interior of your truck. Ford does the exact same thing except even worse.

All major auto makers do this to some extent or another. These big companies that the auto makers out source too are in a tiered system. So say the Tier 1 supplier is completely at max production capacity, then they go to a Tier 2 supplier or Tier 3 supplier. All of these companies will be using different color dyes and types of plastics so the trucks will vary.

Companies that care more about a higher quality end product like Toyota/Lexus will contract with a Tier 1 company that has the production means to produce all the pieces for their vehicles so that more of the plastics will match. Sometimes their Tier 1 supplier doesnt meet the production dates needed and they have to go to another Tier 1 or Tier 2, but normally Toyota/Lexus does a much better job of picking their tiered suppliers. This means they pay more per vehicle because of the increased cost, but in the end they have a product that has little better overall build quality.

Jeremy

P.S. I have a GM truck and the thing will run forever, but there are a lot of things that GM could work better at doing.

Re: Painting Interior Pieces Guide (hopefully)
I've been pretty lucky in that once I can nail down the codes the match is good. It's that first stab that's the challenge.

I just did my gauge pod and got it right the first time. Pure luck.

I know there is a cross-reference somewhere that lists the pairs for a given code. Now to find out where GM hides it.

Re: Painting Interior Pieces Guide (hopefully)
I painted my interior trim using Duplicolor Adhension Promoter (Clear Primer). I scuffed up the surfaces a little before priming. Also make sure you clean it well with glass cleaner to try and get all the armour all off of it. I then used Duplicolor Automotive paint for color. I put on 2 - 3 coats. After that was dry I used Duplicolor Clear (2 - 3 coats) and it came out awesome

Re: Painting Interior Pieces Guide (hopefully)
sounds good. Thats pretty much how I did my interior on my '04 and it turned out great. Does anyone know how to do custom fiberglassing really well?? I have my a-pillars smoothed and painted to match my truck but I want to fiberglass the passanger side and have two tme-m580 alpine 5.8 screens glassed into there to go along with the triple gauge pod on the drivers side with my gauges?? Does anyone do this and can tell me what would be a good way to start it off or do they do it for money and can make one for me?? --Alex

Hey Jeremy, I'm looking for seats with the center flip-down identical to the ones in your sig. What seats are those?? Thanks
Also, I'm thinking about painting my interior, and was wondering how to paint over the air-bag area, which isn't plastic. Would I just need to fiberglass over that?? Thanks again

Re: Painting Interior Pieces Guide (hopefully)
I don't know if it's been covered or not, but I've got a few cracks and chips in the factory paint on my 1991's dash in different places. I'm going for the factory look so I suppose just something like the Krylon Fusion would work, but would I have to sand the plasic down due to those blemishes in the old plastic before painting? I've seen that you mentioned adhesion problems with that sort of paint, but would sanding the textured layer off the plastic help the rattle can paint to hold without chipping? This would be my first venture into painting anything, so, sorry if I sound a bit uneducated in this field cause...I am. lol. Any advice would be helpful. Thanks.

You can pull that peice off and fiberglass it and then smoothe it. That's what i'm gonna do. that's for the 88-93. the 94-98 should just be able to smoothe cause it's a different material.

Re: Painting Interior Pieces Guide (hopefully)
when I repainted my 4wheeeler plastics... I used the Krylon Plastic Fusion paint. I did the underside of the fenders with it(white over blue) and it never chipped at all. I would rip down the stone roads with stones flying and hitting fenders. Not a single chip in 2 summers. I can't imagine how that paint would ever peel off a dash or door panel.

Re: Painting Interior Pieces Guide (hopefully)
My project: Take Cheap used beat up truck and turn it into "like new" condition for a reliable good looking daily driver truck.

I picked up a cheap 1992 gmc sierra. black on grey.

Interior was BAD.. so this is what i did....

1st added cheap seat cover...

2nd.. Dash renew.... lol

Pulled a dash out of a 93 4x4 (junkyard) Maroon in color... 35$ with all parts.

Bought Krylon FUSION (for plastics) in black. 4 cans 3.99$ each

Removed original dash...

Then i followed the krylon instructions.. NO primer it says.. so i clean with soap and water... then clean with a ammonia based product ( windex) to help dry it up. let it dry overnight. painted 2 coats. and waited over night... painted 2 more coats.. overnight... then installed.

On the last pic with flash you can notice that all Vynl based pieces are Shiny. and dash is a semi-gloss(perfect). But this is where the problem is.. the paint stuck to BOTH.. very well with out chipped or scratching during install.. however the vynl pieces are still "sticky" 3 days later Its obvious that its not settling and drying to the Vynl. but it sure is sticking to it. the down fall? dust sticks to it. So the dash is Freaking sweet. and looks awesome.. however i need to find a remedy for the vynl parts besides fiberglassing. Once i do i will post an update i know theres somthing out there:)

Hope this helps anyone.. I Was more going to getting the truck back to factory conditions instead modding with newer style dashs. but from grey to black the interior is a whole new appearence. along with a 200$ sound system and it's coming along!!

Whatcha think?

-Mike
