Re: Painting Interior Pieces Guide (hopefully)
OK
well no insult intended but the origional Faq was really good but it left out a few key steps. First anytime you are painting plastics, especially interior pieces they need to be seriously cleaned after being de-texturized. Armor all and other interior dressings can cause major problems with painting. and the other steps i noticed that were left out were that the paint and primer and clearcoats all need an adhesion promoter and a flex promoter or else the paint will just chip off and crack as soon as you tru to put it back on. Basically if you want your ride to look like a cover truck take it to an experienced painter who is well versed in custom painting and pay a little extra money.

you dont need to have someone else paint your truck for it to be nice. by doing yourself you will save a lot of money and gain some experience. my friend owns a shop and charges about $2000 to paint the whole dash. if you take your time and do it your self the materials wont cost a quarter of that even if you mess up. i did mine in a weekend and spent about $300 on primer paint and clear. i bought way more than i needed but ill use it on something else.

I used a DA and some 80 grit lightly on my door panels, and hand sanded the areas I couldn't get with the DA. You have to be careful not to burn and warp the plastic, and to clean the crud off the paper often. After the DA, I hand sanded with a wicked-thin pad until the panel no longer looked like Tommy Lee Jones' face, then I switched to 320 grit, went through the same motions, then used an automotive primer and paint gun. After that, I used my thin pad (to contour the curves in the panel) with 320, and carefully began sanding the primer 'til the whoe shebang was smooth as a baby's ass

Re: Painting Interior Pieces Guide (hopefully)
Just wanted to follow up with the dash paint tech'. the inital thread was written in regard to my dash. I bought a used dash, dissasembled it and degreased the absolute crap out of it, then scuffed it with 3M scotch brite pad. Applied around 5 coats of Glasurit 285-22 by BASF primer( very high build product ) hand sanded with 320, re-primed prob as many coats as intially done. Re-primed water sanded with 400 and painted. The Glasruit clear sprayed on it has flex additive in it (923-109). Then buffed removed the original, swapped components and wiring, reinstalled. If you try to sand out the grain or texture to and OBS you run the chance of warping of fuzzing up the plastic, so i basicly filled in the grain with primer and built a smooth surface to paint. Hope this helps anyone interested.
