Re: Solid Axle Conversion Tech
I have a question about doing a SAS on my 98 burb. I would like to still retain my stock engine, trans and transfer case. Will the transfer case still work (pushbutton) with swapping out the IFS for SA?

It should, as far as I know. The only difference should be the front driveshaft length.

Re: Solid Axle Conversion Tech
That would be awesome! I am thinking of doing the axles out of a 3/4 ton or 1 ton Dodge and a Radius arm deal with 37 or 38 inch tires. I still want to drive to the trails and haul a couple of buddy's and a day or two worth of gear and refreshments comfortably...

You want a Ford D60, preferably HP. That or you swap your T-case for a P-drop 241.

Re: Solid Axle Conversion Tech
Depends on your transfer case. You also can get away with a HP Dana 44 instead of the 60 if you aren't running tires bigger than 37s hard.

Re: Solid Axle Conversion Tech
Might want to swap rear ends, depends on lug pattern of the front axle. Unless you want a weak rear axle and 2 spare tires.

Check out some of the build threads, it also depends on the spring perch width, that ultimately determines your shackle hanger design.

Re: Solid Axle Conversion Tech
Anyone know the length of the front leaf springs for a SFA? I was looking at the +6 kit from ORU but the price of 1k for a set of front springs is a killer.

I've heard the springs from a 73-87 truck is common, all depends on your shackles and such. Any combo is possible, depends on your lift and all that stuff. Talking to a local spring shop would make things a lot easier.

Re: Solid Axle Conversion Tech
ORU and many other companies use a 47" inch GM front leaf from the 73-91 (88-91 getting different rear bushings). The +6 kit uses an offset 52" inch spring that a company like Alcan can build you in the neighborhood of $200/pack in the 3-6" range.

Re: Solid Axle Conversion Tech
Hey guys im new here but i was looking for some oversight on an idea ive got. I just recently bought a 85 k5 blazer with a 6 inch suspension lift and i have a 1990 chevy k1500 short bed regular cab z71. I was wondering since the lift is like new on the blazer how hard it would be to take the solid axel out and put it under my z71 and ditch the ifs. Now i know most people do it for hardcore wheeling in which i probly will not be doing. But i cant see letting the blazer go with the lift expecialy since i need a lift to clear my 35's ive got waiting to go on it
I have read up alot on it and just wondering what i can take off it. And would i need to buy anything for it? the z71 is an auto 350. The blazer is an 350 3 spd with granny low. Would i have all the parts off the blazer to do the swap??? Thanks guys i apreciate any help you can give

you will run into a bunch of issues such as the t-case in your truck now is on the wrong side to use a chevy axle and the t-case from the parts truck is the wrong spline count to mate to the current trans, the other issue would be steering, you can use brackets from the donor truck to mount the axle but once its in there you will need to change the steering knuckles and run crossover steering with a track bar.
there are quite a few of us over on pavementsucks.com that have built a few sas trucks and can answer every question you have if you don't see what you need here, i currently am working on a absolute table of what axle/lift needed to fit what tire with what backspacing and spring rate differences and lengths causing certain things, we have a few builds to get different measurements from from using stock gm hangers to using oru kits or going with a linked front with coils.

stock 73-87 chevy 2wd rear shackle hangers flipped upside down are the right offset to use for that, there are 2 different length frame hanger brackets if i remember right one is a 11" hanger and the other is 8", and the 8" is the one you want.
like this(test fit picture)
