Backlash is the amount of free movement the pinion has before it affects the ring gear in an axle I believe.

For us old guys there are actually other body style year breaks.

VOBS = Very Old Body Style Pre 1972

ROBS = Real Old Body Style 1973-1981

OOBS = Old Old Body Style 1982-1987 (The hood and front fenders were different than the 73-81's)
