99 pontiac GTP Trans problems??

I have a friend who found a 99 Pontiac GTP super charged leather and in damn fine shape short of one problem. The guy who has it seems to think it needs a trans. I looked around and I did not find much info on the trans in the car or a price. It has 85K on it and it is a real looker very good shape. The guy wants $1000 a grand for it. So any one know what a trans for a 99 pontiac GTP would cost?

My buddy put two trannys in his gtp. They just don't like abuse.

I wouldn't budget less than a grand for it if you're going to have somebody else do it.

The guy says 2nd 3rd work fine but in D it revs like in park. Could be
junk or could be a solenoid or some thing?

He sent an email that said one day its fine when he parked for the night.
The next day on start up has the problem. He said it will run up to 30 mph in the bad gears but no more than that. The other gears run to red line no problem. Never made any strange sounds nothing.

I used to have a GTP. My favorite car ever.

Well for $1400 I can get a beefed up trans for the car from a shop that
hand builds for this car. They beef them up to take the power and last
better than stock. My friend no longer wants it but the guy is willing
to work on the price so I am thinking about it.

I would get a 1000 a grand is not a bad price for such a stout performance car. Plus you can haul family at 30mpg's.

Get the best trans you can afford. A work friend back in the day had one, and with a really beefed tranny his hp improvements wouldn't grenade it in 40k miles. Then he added springs shocks and sway bars with porsche tires, and used to tear up the canyons.

Triple Edge makes some GREAT Transmissions for the W-Body cars.

If I was closer to Philly, that car would be mine, lol.

Also, it could be the clutch, but when mine went on my GTP, it was the planetary gear. Do you know if it lost 1st or 2nd gear? But, before you buy the car, check the motor on it. If it has been modded at all, make sure for the pulley size, it has the accurate supporting mods. Because if not, you might also need to rebuild the motor.
