1995 Jeep grand cherokee---no start

on my beater jeep, 1995 ZJ with teh 4.0 liter it i ahve an issue.

it will start up but only run for a couple seconds then die again. I beleive it is due to teh security system, as i cannot get teh alarm to shut off for some reason and had this issue when i first bought it.

any idea's?

Re: 1995 Jeep grand cherokee---no start

Take the alarm out, CAREFULLY, wire by wire. Jeeps HATE alarms and I have seen them cause major problems after an "expert" installed an alarm. Pull it all out, and go without or start over

Re: 1995 Jeep grand cherokee---no start

ive dealt with alarms effing with cars ALOT but ive never had a alarm allow it to start, normally you cant get it to do anything including crank. id throw a fuel pressure guage on it and see what psi its at while cranking then while idleing. if you ttry to give it gas does it spudder or shut off or act normal?

Re: 1995 Jeep grand cherokee---no start

it is a factory alarm system, so do not even know where to begin to take it out.

and WP- it did this when i first bought it, the alarm goes off any time the battery is disconnected. when i went to pick it up it was acting like it is now, got teh alarm to shut off and it fired right up

it will start up, but won't run. throttle does not change anything, it will not make it run any longer if i feather the throttle or not.

Re: 1995 Jeep grand cherokee---no start

My Jeep 95 Jeep won't start at all this morning. It cranks,I hear the fuel pump running but it has no spark that I can tell. My alarm is all messed up as well. Try and use the key to unlock all the doors and the rear hatch. That might reset it. Don't use the power lock button. I have been reading that you can ground a wire coming in from the drivers' door and that will disable the alarm. One place it says purple with black strip and another it says yellow with purple stripe. I just tried the yellow but the alarm still seems to be working. I can't even get mine to run for a second so I think it's the coil or the crankshaft posisition sensor. I'd say since yours runs for a sec it's somthing to do with the security system. The electrical system on a grand Cherokee limited is a nightmare, i don't think the space shuttle has that big of a maze of wiring!

Re: 1995 Jeep grand cherokee---no start

it used to work just by unlocking the reat hatch manually.

thanks hersbird, now off to find this purple wire! i have heard the purple wire with black stripe before. i'll ground it out and be back with results

Re: 1995 Jeep grand cherokee---no start

I got mine running, turned out to be a 5 min fix with a $30 coil. Ended up also changing plugs, wires, cap, rotor and the crankshaft posisition sensor first. Oh well, next time I'll go with my gut. I think I'll sell this Jeep while I can now!

Re: 1995 Jeep grand cherokee---no start

i don't know if it may help but, i have a 98 grand cherokee and one time i had a problem where i wouldn't start and came to find out that the battery wires where a little loose, so i took care of it and tried to start it then id died right up, i tried to start it again and the same thing over and over again.. so i disconnected the battery for a couple minutes to have the computer to reset it self then i tried again and started with no problem and stayed running..
