2000 Mazda MPV van problem

My mom has a 2000 Mazda MPV van. It will start, but you have to drive two-footed to make it run, IE. it will not idle without giving it some gas. Her *ahem* mechanic *ahem* told her he thought the computer was out. I would think it wouldn't even start if that was the case. I am thinking it is a sensor that is out or something like that. Her mechanic is ASE certified, and a good mechanic, but that shop rips them off, like her alt went out and he said it was $500 for just the alt, then labor on top of that. I looked up the alt at Auto Zone and it was $150. Any ideas?
