Question 1979 Chevy Flatbed.

I have a friend who has a timing issue with his 1979 Chevy flatbed.

350 V8, 2bbl, Points HEI ignition, Pretty much stock.

Put all new ignition on it (Distributor, cap, rotor, coil, wires, plugs.

Idles rough, then when you give it gas it backfires out the carb. It did this before he did all the stuff to it. I'm still thinking it's not timed right. Any other ideas of what it could be? I'm not thinking it's a flat cam, or valve train?

Re: 1979 Chevy Flatbed.

if timing is erratic at idle, I would suspect internal engine damage or just plain worn out.

I'm thinking it's a flat cam. I mean a 350 in that big of a truck!!!

Re: 1979 Chevy Flatbed.

Timing chain got slack. On a big truck like that people use the engine to hold it back instead of brakes. Also check distributor gear and for slack. Does the timing jump around with a timing light on it?

Beef it up, put a new intake with Vortec heads on it and a 4bbl. Get some longtubes and do a full exhaust, let it breathe. With some work a 350 could do well in a truck that size, i'd imagine it's already got granny low gearing and axle ratio.

Re: 1979 Chevy Flatbed.

We had a c60 log truck like that with a 350. Loaded you will not break the speed limit but it got the job done. One guy use to haul logs with a inline 6. LOL.

Re: 1979 Chevy Flatbed.

I'd prefer an inline 6 over a 350 in a truck like that, a built inline 6 with proper gearing will pull like a diesel and last forever. There was an old Ford F-600 for sale near my house, I wanted to buy it and drop a built 300 into it with a 4-speed, it'd be more truck than I need though, right now my stripped minivan hauls everything lol.

Re: 1979 Chevy Flatbed.

Turns out the guy who installed the wires got two backwards. Now it runs like a top. Still a little underpowered but gets the job done.
