Mustang Rear in an S10?
I plan on swapping a Ford rear end into my S10.
I was going to look for a square bodied Explorer 8.8" because the rear itself is almost a direct swap. However, I came across a deal on rear from a first generation Mustang. Will that swap just as easily? It's been YEARS since I've been under a Mustang of that vintage and I cannot remember what kind of suspension they have.

Possible, May have to modify the shock mounts, and possible the brake assy.
The best rearend from ford was the 9" if you ask me.
Best of luck with your swap bro.

Re: Mustang Rear in an S10?
My understanding is that a 9" is too wide. On the Exploder 8.8", the spring perches are only off by 1/4" on each side and supposedly you can nudge the springs enough to get everything to line up.
I may buy this Mustang rear just because it's only $100. I'm sure I can resell it for more.

Re: Mustang Rear in an S10?
9" should not be to wide if you get one out from under a car, a truck 9" would be however.
but for 100 for teh stang 8.8, worth a shot

Re: Mustang Rear in an S10?
The 8.8 is a pretty good diff. As others have said, the 9" is better. For your truck and purposes, I would look into having a 9" narrowed. Any race shop has probably done hundreds of them. My dad does them with a JET horizontal band saw, so any competent race/machine shop could do it for a fair price. You'll have to buy shortened axles as well, or either have yours cut and resplined by Strange or Moser.

Re: Mustang Rear in an S10?
What is the average price of narrowing a 9"? I mean, the project is being done on a rather tight budget.

It'll probably vary wildly from shop to shop. I'd call around just to get an idea on pricing, as well as call Strange and Moser axle companies for the axle shortening.
