If it was an all naturally aspirated motor build-up, the Chevy would win hands down. Meanwhile to remain somewhat remotely competitive, the Ford needs a little boost.

Stock for stock, yeah. That 454 is a joke, but so is the fact that it takes a 351HO to keep up with that unnecessarily restricted 454 with 7.8:1CR. Is that something worth bragging about? Mod for mod that 454 will hand the Ford it's ass, guaranteed. Let's not forget now that the 454 is breathing, the Ford needs boost to keep up. There's no replacement for displacement.

Isn't the Fail supercharged though?
That takes any advantage the big block Chevy had right there.

They've got insurance but it's that they are TV personalities and that if one of them wrecked and hurt a bystander somehow; there could be a huge lawsuit. They rented a track and ran them, it will air sometime in october along with the sport truck shootout that they went to.

Re: 90 454SS vs 94 Lightning - TrucksTV
Those BASTARDS, they used the exact same 18" Torq Thrust IIs on the 454 I picked out for my truck 3 years ago. Oh well, they look awesome. And my truck will have a MUCH better stance.

Re: 90 454SS vs 94 Lightning - TrucksTV
the 454 need less rake, that looks kinda bad with like 3" difference. still, words cant even describe how much more sporty it looks then the lighting. not that the lightning looks bad, it just looks like a poor attempt at the street truck scene, its so freaking big and bulky looking.

Re: 90 454SS vs 94 Lightning - TrucksTV
its not that the lightening is big and buly, they are both big trucks. its that the ss has much smoother body lines, and just an overall better looking truck, the ford is just not sporty looking that year. that body style ford looked good lifted, thats it...

Re: 90 454SS vs 94 Lightning - TrucksTV
Not really to be honest. 351ft-lbs with ~20-22% drivetrain loss is 440-450ft-lbs at the flywheel. I predicted 448 hp and 470ft-lbs using Desktop Dyno (from post# 72), but this is modelled with a decent exhaust (dual exhaust, headers). This 454ss is running a y-pipe, single cat, single 3" exhaust. Not surprising it's down a few ponies. They also had problems getting more power past 5000 RPM. At 5000 RPM, looks like 435 hp according to my graph. Add a lesser flowing exhaust and you'll lose a lot more at high RPM. Pretty easy to drop power in a choked system.

Have they ran them on the track yet? I assume not. When?

Re: 90 454SS vs 94 Lightning - TrucksTV
Back when they built the motor for the SS they were expecting near 450 HP why is it down so much in the dyno numbers? Thats a lot more than 20% powertrain losses.
Also, the sts turbos do a good bit for low end torque, those numbers for the lightning look about right. The estimated output for a vortec 5.3 on sts website is something like 350hp and 450lbs/ft at the wheels with a turbo, and its a little bit more powerful stock than an HO 351. Assuming he has about 2500 stall converter the lightning should be at full boost off the line and with an auto trans the lightning could very well beat out the naturally aspirated SS.
I hate it because the SS is a much better looking truck, but modern engineering has a way of winning out.

318 rwhp is ~400-408 fwhp. 450 fwhp was an estimate and it probably would be if he had better exhaust. I believe this is the max hp of this engine when properly configured with optimal tuning and exhaust. Could also have a tuning issue with ignition/spark since they had problems with making power over 5000 RPM. Max power should be at 5500-5600 RPM with that Edelbrock camshaft. A:F ratio is only part of the equation. Most of the tuning performance affecting torque (and hp) is due to ignition timing.
