Re: 90 454SS vs 94 Lightning - TrucksTV
Yeah, they went to all the trouble to retain AIR but don't have an EGR valve. Would fail visual here.
It does really seem Edel is sponsoring the buildup of the 454SS and its just what's dictated to them as far as parts.
They could've used the Edel MPFI system and stole injectors from the Pro Flo line.
With a stroker kit, they would've been way ahead of the game.
I would think a higher stall converter would work better with that cam. Stock stalls around 1200.

Re: 90 454SS vs 94 Lightning - TrucksTV
everyone is making fun of how litle power the ss had stock, but you gota remember back in the day that thing was badass and imo still is. its got a big block, nothing will get you more power for your doller than geting power from a big block, it has so much potential...
after seeing that episode i would still have no problem buying a 454ss, they were built pretty stout if you ask me its just a matter of geting the big block to perform how it realy should.
i was suprised at how many of you were bad mouthing the 454ss, i still think it is a realy badass truck, you gota see it for its potential...

LOL! you do realize that most of the guys running their piehole about the SS would be lucky to lay down 180rwhp. basic boltons, MPI intake, and full exhaust will have that truck saying to 99% of the trucks chevy has produced.

truck U is the worste show EVER, id rather watch them change brakes on a minivan than half the **** they do on that show... trucks! ftw

I agree. It is going to lose some low end torque compared to the stock setup due to the higher duration camshaft and single plane intake. The upgraded exhaust system and higher compression will help out torque levels, but I think it will still be sluggish off the line due to the weight of the truck. Installing a 2000 or 2500 RPM stall torque converter would have been a good choice while he had the transmission out.

Re: 90 454SS vs 94 Lightning - TrucksTV
The Chevy's got lower gears though, and a small block with a turbo isn't a torque monster by any stretch of imagination. That STS will take time to spool up, and both trucks look to be similar size even though the 454ss has got to have a beefier frame and the added wight of the big-block.

i dont want to see a trans, i want to see some form of concrete information confirming its existance, from a reputable source.

You are correct, no 4L80 all wer 4L80E.

Wrong! That lightning will move out with that STS kit on there! They are sweet! My brother had a STS on his SS and there was no lag in the boost dept.

The reason so many folks say that is that Chevy deliberately choked the 454SS with peanut port heads (TRUCK heads, not PERFORMANCE heads) and it's accompanying intake and cam. A simple head swap to some readily available 781 or 049 castings and a good intake and cam has to be worth 100hp - 150hp.
My dream truck is a 454SS clone with my pump gas 565 under the hood. Think I'd get any action on the street - EVERYBODY knows that the 454SS trucks are slugs...right ;)

Re: 90 454SS vs 94 Lightning - TrucksTV
All Chevy did with the 454SS trucks was to use off the shelf parts.
The same engines/trannies/rears were in dump/hd trucks.

I saw it too. After all the money is spent on mods they could probably buy a newer used HI_PO mill out of a wrecked newer Muscle car and have WAY more power.

the 14SF is NOT a heavy truck rear end, that would be the FF. also, you cant get a 5 lug 14SF in any other model but the 454 SS.

sweet. I like how he talked about it being a rebuild so it was better to just bolt a top end on to. If I found that out about a truck I bought it would be an immediate tear-down. no telling what asshat had his paws in there at rebuild time. LOL.
