Re: stroker choice
depends on how you're getting your 408ci. if you're talking about a .040" overbored 400, vs a 383, go 408. if you're thinking of stuffing a 4" crank into a stock 350 block, keep dreaming, and build a 383. stuffing a 4" crank into a stock block is VERY sketchy.

Re: stroker choice
gotta agree with grease 100. also the 377s make good power too and rev like hell. if ya dont know bout that its actully a destroked motor. 400 sb .030 over and 350 crank. for some weird reason ive always loved those motors. but 383 and 408 are both good motors, same with the 406/410s. our friend has a 408 in his vette and runs 9.20s off spray easily. but whatever ur prefrence is man, good luck with it and let us know ur choice

Re: stroker choice
Depends on what your budget is and what you want the motor to do .

Re: stroker choice
My girlfriends dad is building her an 89 tube chassis Berreta, NUCKING FUTS I know, with a 418 in it and that pushed his 3300lb. Chevelle to high 7s low 8's in the 1/8 mile, but its also got an all Dart top end and 13.5:1 Compression

Re: stroker choice
10ci of displacement is not going to have any noticable gain in performance. furthermore, just because it has the same displacement doesnt mean its going to perform the same.

Re: stroker choice
Just curious if you're starting with a 1 or 2 piece rear main seal block. It's my understanding the vortec blocks had better metalurgy and were more resistant to wear. Plus 1 piece > 2 piece if you can.

if it's a virgin 400, I'd go in increments of 406, 408, 412 ci...no need to bore a good 400 block all the way for a few cubes.
8.0's in 1/8 isn't that great....buddy had a 412 in a '64 malibu, could drive it anywhere, even 40 mile highway trips, click off 11.40's all day on motor.

Re: stroker choice
my buddies 76 malibu ran 6.90s on motor at super chevy two weeks ago and that with a 421 small block were hoping for 5.80s with the spray

im amazed how many guys dont understand that boring a block to the max isnt worth the hassle. you lose rigidity in the cylinder walls, which kills ring seal, and destabilizes piston to wall clearance. all for a few cubes...
you have no idea how many guys i've come across that tried to brag to me, "i have a 355, its better than a 350" congrats, you have freshly round bores- unless your machinist is a retard. and a 1.4% increase in displacement. big deal. installing the proper head gasket will net you better gains.
