Exclamation built vortec 454 vs. built 6.0??

well yall, im at it agin. WAnting more, sure i can drop more into my engine but id like to have something with more potential to build and drop in. another slow project lol. im leanin towards a 6.0 myself, but id like more input. i can either look for a BBC out of a 3/4 ton to tear down and rebuild, or find a 6.0 to build. takin all advice

Re: built vortec 454 vs. built 6.0??

A 454 BBC can be made to 496 cubes easily and no loss of life span.

A 6.0 can be build to 408, but will likely last only 120K miles. Due to shallow piston design, and short deck height combined.

As with much in life do you have smog laws to abide by? Plan to do more then just race? Or do you want future upgradeability.

A 454 can get 450-475 smog legal HP with all the bolt-ons and some tricks of the imagination. It would bolt right in and be easiest to get running in all likely hood.

A 6.0 can get 475-500 smog legal HP with the same as above, but could be trickey to get smog legal and get running in a obs.

In a street race the 454 would likely win from a dig, but a 6.0 would tear it up top-end.

Not smog legal its all where your pocket books cries stop.

Re: built vortec 454 vs. built 6.0??

smog legal? we dont have to worry about that around here. no testing thank tha lord. im also leaning toward the 6.0, i know a 454 would kill me on gas, but a 6.0 could still get decent mileage from what i hear

I vote 454 or 496. There's just something about a BBC that is sexy.

IMO, ditch both and go for an 8.1

But you could be this guy

My vote is the 6.0 if you want decent mileage.

Re: built vortec 454 vs. built 6.0??

I'd vote for a BB chevy, even if it's a 7.4L or 8.1L.

I love small blocks, but theres nothing like a deep breathing BB screaming up the tachometer and throwing you back in your seat

Quick highlight from pt.net on the subject:

99-00 lq4 had iron heads and a longer crank that cant be coupled to a 4l60, only a 4l80
01-04 lq4 came with aluminum heads and can be coupled to a 4l60 or 4l80
05-newer lq4 came with aluminum heads and the stronger rods that were in lq9's and can be coupled to a 4l60 or 4l80
all lq4's had 9.4:1 comp ratio
lq9's had the stronger rods aluminum heads, but with flat top pistons for a bump in compression ratio to 10:1

if i was going n/a i would pick up an lq9, for boosted i would go lq4, and if i was looking for an lq4 it would be an 05 or newer

Either way, if you go 6.0 get yourself a complete wiring harness for the swap.

Re: built vortec 454 vs. built 6.0??

If you are seriously asking this question... Go BIG BLOCK and don't look back. You could build a tall deck 427 truck block into a 540 CID stroker and make 600+ smog legal hp.

I think you can only bore a 6.0 .040 for a total displacement of about 370 inches. More displacement would mean a stroker crank, not just over bored.

My 6.0 had to go .040 to clean it up and I was told that was about max in my engine.

You could start with that from the factory by picking up the 8.1L Vortec, 496 cubes. Something like 370hp 570lb-ft stock.
