Re: Power mods of 99-02 5.3 V8
Hey all... I recently put a intercooled procharger on my 2000tahoe with the 5.3, and I am just not happy with the power... maybe its cuz it has 4 wheel drive and the rig weighs as much as a small oceanliner... anyways the tahoe has 128000 miles on it and was wondering when the time comes to rebuild the motor, what could be done to either build it to handle more boost, or maybe just drop a ls2 motor in it??? any ideas

Re: Power mods of 99-02 5.3 V8
I noticed under cooling it had the electric fans at a cost of $400+. On Jegs I noticed they had dual electric fans for $189-209. Are these any good? The $189 dual fans are 12" at 2600cfm I believe.

Re: Power mods of 99-02 5.3 V8
hope im not dragging up an old thread but i just bought a 2001 silverado ext cab 2WD 5.3/auto to replace my stolen, never recovered first gen tahoe.
so far i only have crane firewire ignition wires (for an ls1 i think)and a flowmaster single in dual out muffler.
i am looking at some programmers but not sure what to get. im looking for improved fuel economy and hp/tq gains but i want to stay with 87 octane cuz i drive 60+ miles a day and gas aint gettin no cheaper.
i would like to find a used one or something less than $200 hopefully.
superchips has the discontinued max microtuner new for $200 on their website and ebay. it claims like 9-11 hp and 10 tq with the 87 octane tune.
is there something better? i read of the maxenergy hypertech and econ but are they worth the $380? is there that much difference over the hyper3 programmer other than being updateable?
i did some research on jet, superchips, hypertech, edge, diablosport, but couldnt find gain specs on all them. i assume some of them dont have 87 octane tune as an option.
(for now i think im try the throttle body bypass mod next since i live in texas and it dont get very cold here)
maybe someone on this site has a programmer for sale?

I think you'd be better off going with a custom tune. You can get it cheaper than a programmer with a lot more options and it's custom tuned to your preferences. Do a search for Wheatley or Wait4Me. There are more but those are the only ones I can think of right now.

correct me if im wrong cuz ive never got a custom tune before...a custom tune would be nice but isnt easily removable/reversible like a programmer? when i think of custom tune, its flashed in the computer or a new chip is burned and is non-adjustable settings afterward unlike programmers and arent dyno runs part of the process?
i found a superchips 2715 max microtuner new for $200 and a quadzilla stealth2 used on here for $200 also. i was thinking i could remove it and sell the programmer later if i need to upgrade so i dont think id save much money going for a custom tune over a programmer since i could sell programmer for close to what i paid for it since im only looking at $200. what does a custom tune run anyway$$?
im interested in small mods to add mpg and hp/tq. probally wont tear into the engine for a cam or heads or the like as i have a mustang project already where mpg isnt a concern.
just looking to get a couple more mpg and hp/tq for a daily driver

I noticed your Spring, Texas. If you don't mind a little drive Xtreme Horsepower in Fort Worth does custom Dyno tunes. Call and ask them about removing the tune or dealer warranty issues. Their tuner, Arvil, is awesome they did my 83 chevy 5.3L swap. My dyno tune was like $400 so its not any worse than a good hand held tuner and its going to give you beter results.

Re: Power mods of 99-02 5.3 V8
Nobody has said a word about o2 simulators??? I guess most of you have inspections, but here in OK, we don't, so you can do pretty much whatever you want. I bought some o2 simulators of ebay for under $20. They are simply a resistor that will keep the a/f mixture where it is supposed to be, which is somewhere around 15????? You wire them inline on your o2 sensors, and then you can cut your cats completely off. My check engine light still comes on, but the mileage is good, power is better without the cats, louder, and best of all no replacing the $75 o2 sensors. Plus I can turn off the check engine light if I want with the programmer.
I have a couple Q's: first, what is this vette tranny mod??? I have the ability to adjust shift points and firmness with the programmer, would I still benefit from this?
Also, I want some decently priced shorty headers that DO NOT LEAK! Any suggestions based on experience? Thanks alot!

Just curious, but why does the list not include msd 8.5mm wires? I thought MSD was the best out there?
