Why is that a bad idea? It doesn't hurt anything. Just turn it over when you need it and turn it back when you don't.

Are you saying this is harmful for the engine (that's why there's an air filter there), or ineffective? If you're saying it's ineffective, I'd have to disagree with you. In this case, I believe the benefit of the extra volume of air is greater than the drawback of warmer air. Ideally, we'd want a large volume and cool air temperature, but I'd have to agree that in this application, an open element will probably flow better than the factory setup. Even if you remove the airbox from the fender, the inlet to the air cleaner assembly is still a huge restriction... I wish I could get some dyno #s to back this up, but they wouldn't be able to simulate the airflow as the vehicle is moving... Take Care, DJ

I'm not saying turning the cover over gives the most power but it still filters fine and gives some extra power and sound and it doesn't cost a penny either. Its just a thought.
Have any of you use one of those ram air tubes that goes from the fender to the filter housing? Do they even work? Is there a noticable power increase? |

i dunno man. but i do the lid flip. its sweet. it is louder and it does give more power. i actually gained like 15-20 miles to the tank. i dont know why that much but i did. and yea. no money spent is a lot better than $350 for a k&n intake system

I think I got worse gas mileage because I liked to hear it roar a little to much. Most of my driving is around town, about five miles a day to and from school and around town. I usually get about 11 or 12 but a tank will last me anywhere from two weeks to a month so its not so bad. I'm glad that someone agrees with me about turning the lid over.

ok im not saying that im not guilty i tried it when i first started in the truck scene but a piece of dryer tubing to replace the stocker tube goes much further and its only about 3 bucks. if your gonna flip your lid you might as well hook your intake straight up to the exaust. hot air bad, cold air good

yea ive been think about doin that. but how exactly will it connect to my TBI?? ive got a 93 silverado 350. where would i cut a whole? what filter do i use. give me lots of details. and until then...ill run the lid flip. cuz its really workin good so far. but yea i would like to know the "right" way to do it. i mean, that sotck air tube that connects to the actually big round air cleaner unit is soooooooooooooo restrictive. its only like 1.5 inches tall by like 4 inches wide. thats freakin tiny. it would make sense if i could get the tube diretly over the TBI and get rid of all the stock crap altogether.

I found a ram air tube on ebay for $10.95 . To me that looks better than a piece of dryer vent hose but thats just me.

Try going to that. I don't know if it'll work cause I've never posted a picture and don't really know how.

Here you go, this is a Home Depot special. The 24"X4" round tube will actually make two of these intakes, and I used electrical tape to make a good seal. All told, about $3 invested in this intake:

That doesn't look near as bad as I thought it would but I'm still goin with the one on ebay for $10.95 because I'm ordering a TBI spacer and injector spacer from the same place. Thanks anyway.

Actually, the one on ebay is just the intake tube that used to come with the old 4.3L V6s. My '89 C1500 had that exact tube...

how would that be more efeective than just flipping the lid over though? when you flip the lid you have 360 degrees of sucking power with no restrictions other than the filter. when you go through the tube there is just so much restriction.

Kevin -
I'm in agreement with you that flipping the lid provides more airflow than this setup (see my previous post in this thread - last one on page 3), they just asked for pics of it... DJ
