Performance for a 97 V8 C1500

Right now I have Flowmasters and an MSD 6A ignition. I would like to know what mods would help me the most. I'm on a tight budget. I've been thinking about pulleys or maybe a throttle body upgrade. I basically want to have a streetable and good performing naturally aspirated truck. Any suggestion of the route I should take to get more power out of my 5.7 Vortec 350? Thx!

Thx a lot guys!I'll probably get my engine custom tuned by Ed Wright's Fastchip Inc. (Tulsa, OK) because it's near where I live and it would be easy to get the program modified if necessary (20 min drive). He does customized programming much like Wester's. What do you think? Anyone had experience w/ Fastchips? I think that would probably provide the most noticable gain in performance. Also, I have a K&N filter right now, would a UPD intake be that much better and is it pretty easy to install a throttle body spacer? Which brand of tb spacer?

PS: I'm new to the forum and all the people here seem to be really friendly and helpful. You guys are great!

^Get that wheelspin fixed. I ran a 9.9 stock in mine. I figure you should be in low 9s with all you have done.

Thx for your input fordsmoker. Now, I just wanted to know if headers have a real advantage. I heard that you lose too much backpressure (low end torque). I was talking to the head tech at a custom exhaust shop and he said that headers were a waste on an EFI vehicle because the computer relies on the backpressure to make adjustments to airflow. Also, that the maintenence wasn't worth it (ie. replacing gaskets and tightening). This is also important because I don't really have to tools or want to have to replace gaskets and re torque the bolts regularly. Any thoughts?

Well I dont care what the exhaust guy said, but hedders do make a difference in hp and tq.If you get some hedders all you have to do is buy some fel-pro gaskets at your nearest Oreillys and that will last you nearly forever. Also you can get some locking bolts for hedders from summit or jegs. They are not as complicating as that guy is tellin you.

Best mods are Thorley Headers, and Ed Wright programming which is Fastchip ....not superchips. But when you do headers get full dual exhaust also. I gained over 20 hp at the wheels just by using a cutout when I had stock piping between my headers and catback 3" exhaust. I think I have the most N/A horsepower for a 96-99 Vortec truck, with stock fuel injection that I have heard of. (not trying to bragg....please chime in if otherwise) I have a throttle body spacer if you want it. You can fab up a very clean cold air intake for under $50 from a diesel shop, then just get headers, program, and full exhaust. Don't get shorty headers, they also give you shorty gains. Good luck!

I have a couple questions for you...when u did the cutout where was it on the exhaust system...are you running o2 sims? and how did it affect your low end and where was your hp gained at..i have unboltede my exhaust before and it fealt like crap on the low end but fealt really good mid-top.... and i hope to be up on the hp n/a on my motor soon.. and did u install the cam yourself??

and where did u dyno your truck and do you have any 1/4 times?

Fordsmoker,
Can you tell me which Hedman headers are you using. I'm looking to put some on my 2000 OBS Z71 Tahoe with the 5.7. I'm haven't been able to find the right part number yet.
Thanks,
Jeff

OK,if you want the ones I have which are the shoties,if you do not have air injection the part number is 69650,if you have air injection the part number is 69651.Without air it is only about 240.00,and it made a pretty big difference.

It is 4WD. It doesn't have air injection. I'm trying to decide on shorty or long tubes. My major plans are UPD, LT1 cam, 1.5 roller rockers, headers, 2 1/2 duals with an x-pipe and Borla Xr1s. That is about the extent of the mods planned at the moment. I really just need the torque to tow the Formula at times. Any suggestions?
Thanks,
Jeff

Looks like for now I'm gonna get a UPD intake since I already have a K&N filter and I can get the FSC 10% discount. Anyone know if UPD plans on doing another group sale? Second, I'll put in a tb spacer. After that, I think I'll grab some Hooker ceramic coated headers w/ copper seals. I'd have to get them installed because I dont't really have the patience or tools to do the job easily...plus I'll need a new crossover pipe and cat welded in anyway. As for the dual muffler setup, I think I'm gonna have to go against it because I need low-end torque and horsepower to pull a 20 foot boat if necessary. What do you guys think? Thx for all your input.

PS: Can Anyone post some pics of a UPD install on a 97 5.7 engine? I'd appreciate it.

I have the UPD intake tube on my truck, I'll try to get a pic sometime today. You should be aware that you only get a tube that goes from your throttle body to the mass airflow sensor. If you have a throttle body spacer the parts that they send won't work correctly with it, you have to do some fabbing. Personally, I think I'd get the volant the next time.
