Flowtech Shortys vs. Summit Shorties
alrite... means i ahve a cracked exhasut manifold and not much really behind that im completly redoing my exhasut systehm
gonna go with shorty headers and dont want to spend much.
narrowed it down to
Some
Flowtech Shorty Emission legal headers which i can get for 202 thru summit.. or some summit racing shorty truck headers which go for 152
whihc is better? any one have either?
then after the headers, puttin on a brand new factory y-pipe i have sititn around, tghats gonn run into a Flowmaster Super 44 off-road series 3''inlet and 2.5 dual outlet, and the duals out the back.
so summit or flowtech?

Re: Flowtech Shortys vs. Summit Shorties
I have had 3 sets of flowtechs, on 3 different trucks of course. Only thing I can suggest is different gaskets. All of them leaked bad until I changed them. I tightened them often but they just don't seem to be a great gasket.

Re: Flowtech Shortys vs. Summit Shorties
I had the Summit shorties on my 88 with no complaints. Good for the $$ imo.

Re: Flowtech Shortys vs. Summit Shorties
well i went with flotechs.. and so far.. they are great..
totally nite and day from my old exhasut system.
whcih was manifolds were had a crack on one. the gaskets leaked, donuts were shot. flanges on the y-pipe were shot.. went into like a 2'' glass pack..
now i have no leaks.. and that flowmasters sound!

Re: Flowtech Shortys vs. Summit Shorties
I bought the "summit" brand for my old 88 tbi 350 a few years ago and I remember them having a flow-tec emblem welded onto one of the tubes.

Re: Flowtech Shortys vs. Summit Shorties
summit headers are made by a company called pacesetter. There the biggest piece of junk headers I ever tried. Had nothing but egr valve problems. And no low end torque. Tires wouldn't chirp any more through the gears. The stock manifolds had a better sound then these things. You get alot of hesitation on take off.

Re: Flowtech Shortys vs. Summit Shorties
is it correct that you wont get the FULL potential out of headers if you dont port your heads????

Re: Flowtech Shortys vs. Summit Shorties
honestly neither JBA shorties are the way to go if you're getting shorties i mean you can't beat the sound & performance...plus your getting your quality name & a quality part i hope your not just getting these based on their prices...if that's the situation then i would save up and go quality $650/pair JBA
but if i were forced to choose flowtech i suppose...i wouldn't ever go with the magazine brand

Re: Flowtech Shortys vs. Summit Shorties
I have the summit shorties(pacesetter).haven't had any problems with them, best part about them is how thick the flanges are no leaks even with the gaskets they sent with them.

Are Edelbrock shorties any good? I have some for a TBI engine on ebay but I'm thinking about keeping them.

Fel Pro exhaust manifold gaskets FTW. i dont buy header gaskets, and none of my trucks have/will have manifolds. started using the exhaust manifold gaskets a few years back, and havent had a bit of problem. been using Flowtech headers for a little over 10 years. the set i just put on my 94 a couple days ago was the FIRST set i've ever had to do anything to in order to get them to fit perfect. ended up dimpling 2 tubes on the passenger header just slightly for bolt clearance. i'd also recomend the 11504 headers from Flowtech, and the 11504Y y-pipe to go along with them. MUCH larger tube than your stocker, and not crimp bent. blows the stocker out of the water!

big advertising, like JBA does in the truck mags, doesnt equal a superior product. like i said in my previous post, i've been running Flowtechs for years without issue. no sense in spending $350 on a set of headers just to restrict them with a stock y pipe. you can buy the Flowtech headers and the higher flowing Y pipe for $285. just doesnt financially make any sense.
as for buying Summit brand stuff... been doing that for years as well. i guarantee that EVERYTHING in the Summit catalog is available someplace else in that catalog with a different brand name on the box, and a higher price. Summit wont put their name on something that is a total piece of crap.

Re: Flowtech Shortys vs. Summit Shorties
I ordered summit shorties for my 93 350 silverado, a flowtech box of headers arrived. When I installed them, they fit easy and I painted them with the 1200 degree duplicolor and it never burned off. The problem was no gains and the collector leaked like a sieve where there was not much weld in between the four tubes, kind of a toss up on summits or flowtechs.

interesting, none of my Flowtechs have ever had a Flowtech emblem welded to them anywhere. i've got 4 sets right now, and have probably had 6 or 7 other sets.
