straight pipes for my truck
i am currently looking into getting new exhaust on my 1993 chevy 1500. i talked to a local exhaust guy that has his own garage. i told him i wanted it to be fu***** loud. as loud as possible without taking out my cats. he told me what i should do is run 3" pipes with 2 magnaflow high flow cats,no mufflers, and 4" tips. what i have now is stock cats and i chopped off the muffler. so i have a few questions to ask. any help is greatly appreciated.

1. how much louder is it gonna be? and will it get that popping noise? if not how can i get that?

2. will this give me more back pressure than i have now?

3. how will this effect my gas milage?

4. will this effect my emmisions at all?

5. he said something about how true duals wouldnt be as loud as if i ran a y pipe instead. is that true? because i wanted to run true duals.

6. is there a better high flow cat that will make it louder?

and any other comments are welcome.
thanks guys,
-eric

Re: straight pipes for my truck
The only thing that is louder than straight pipes is open headers.

Stock muffler= lots of back pressure
Aftermarket muffler = less back pressure
No muffler = almost no back pressure
No cats no muffler = the least amount of back pressure

And if you want popping, get glasspacks or bullets

Re: straight pipes for my truck
1. how much louder is it gonna be? and will it get that popping noise? if not how can i get that?

*Loud as hell. Tons of rasp.

2. will this give me more back pressure than i have now?

*No. However your exhaust velocity will suck.

3. how will this effect my gas milage?

*A turn for the worse due to lack of exhaust velocity and large pipe size.

4. will this effect my emmisions at all?
*Not if you keep the cats.

5. he said something about how true duals wouldnt be as loud as if i ran a y pipe instead. is that true? because i wanted to run true duals.

*I always thought true duals were louder than running a Y but i cannot confirm. Depends on the setup.

6. is there a better high flow cat that will make it louder?

*No. Magnaflow/Carsound make good aftermarket converters that flow well and are pretty reasonably priced.

Re: straight pipes for my truck
thanks liftedz. but i still have a few more questions if you dont mind clearing them up for me.

1. what is exhaust velocity?

2.should i run 2 1/2 in. pipes instead? would this be louder than 3?

3. am i going to need 2 cats or just 1?

thanks a lot guys

Re: straight pipes for my truck
Take a read at this CLICK
That explains the concept behind the exhaust velocity. I would go with nothing bigger on a stock 350 than dual 2.5". But even that size is still pushing the rather large side. I dont know if 2.5" will be louder than 3" or not but fuel mileage will suck with 3" dual pipes. If you run duals then you will need two cats.

Re: straight pipes for my truck
it would probably sound about like this

the setup on this video...
true dual 2.5" pipes with dynomax high flow cats and 3.5" tips

http://youtube.com/watch?v=41A5LQWijY0

i think it sounds pretty good and it has some pop to it

Thanks ILD^

its funny how all you guys that like the sound of glasspacks and/or straight pipes are 16-18. one day you'll see the light and realize how crappy it really sounds.

yes, i've been to the brickyard a couple times, passed up free tickets to MI and Chicagoland several times. you're not going to get anything near that sound out of any Gen I small block, and especially with the Rpms that a street drivable small block will turn. in order to get that design, you need the SB2.2s heads, and the bottom end capable of 8000 RPM, its the efficiency of the engine that makes it sing the way it does.

Re: straight pipes for my truck
even more efficient engine, and probably 12000 RPMs easy.
