Re: Y-pipe or True duals ?

currently have stock manifolds, stock y-pipe, 3" single to a mellowtone dual 2.5" out muffler & dumped.

later, i might go with longtubes, cats, h-pipe, & 2.5" true dual

You can fit an H-pipe into it, the pipes just run next to each other so just have a pipe wleded in the middle running parallel, you'll be amazed at how much it tones the exhaust and makes a deeper rumble.

Re: Y-pipe or True duals ?

I cant vote because my set-up is not a choice. I have True Duals, into the muffler, but the "y-pipe" really is just a "Y" shape, and not a Y-Pipe in the real sense.

Dual 2.5" in and Single 3.5" out, into a 4" tip.

Re: Y-pipe or True duals ?

My 94 has a V6. It has dual 2 1/4 pipes, dual Thunderbodt cats, dual Flowmaster 40s, dual 3 inch tips exiting behind the rear tires. It still has manifolds.

My Scrambler has a 1979 305 in it. It has 2 1/2 pipes, dual Thunderbolt cats, dual Cherry Bomb Extremes, turndowns past the cab. It also has Headman headers. I think this setup is one the loudest you can get and still be legal.

Is anyone using SLP Loudmouths? I heard they are the loudest you can get.

Re: Y-pipe or True duals ?

On all of my previous vehicles i've run headers with no cats into an x-pipe with dynomax bullets and then dumped. On my 08 silvy i've got a Y with no muffler and dumped.

Most folks make the mistake of putting the X and H pipe too far back in the system to have full advantage of it.

Re: Y-pipe or True duals ?

The cheater way of finding where to locate the H is to use regular temp spray paint and paint both pipes then watch for what section burns out first. That's where the pipe needs to go. It's the location of highest turbulence in the down pipe.

X's tend to be located where you can fit them, but they act differently on the flow. An H allows a balancing of pressures across both pipes. X's act as venturi for the other bank.

I'd even go so far as to say that a properly sized Y pipe'd single exhaust might make more power than true duals with no connection. You're balancing two separate 4 cyl engines with regard to the exhaust banks. Either they can fight each other, or they can help. You gain scavenging by having both banks connected at some point (so long as it's in the right location to be properly phased for the pulses).

Re: Y-pipe or True duals ?

Mine is a Y pipe with a glasspack muffler in the stock muffler location. Sounds good but not loud.
