i need to get them rebent and put back on i just dont have the money to do so right now. but if you have a welder hell just make your own Y pipe.... just use 2 45degree pipes put them on the stock pipes and mark the center where they would cross, cut em and weld em together, then get a pipe big enough to fit around both pipes that are welded together and mark the pipes with the straight pipe over them, cut off the end and weld the straight pipe onto the back... sounds like alot more work yes but not really that much work.
i tried buying a Y pipe for my truck and the pipes where still off about 1-2inches, thats main reason why i just paid my exhaust shop to put the pipes out the rear and keep it true duals.

with the single inlet and outlet they have alot more choices when it comes to mufflers and a easy fit.
the bullet mufflers are great! got a nice tone to it!

Re: 96-98 muffler?

o ya i love mine!!!!! as loud as no muffler but no or very little cracking at higher revs! hell my friend at work just commented on how nice they sounded a few days ago when i gased it out in the parking lot. defiantly worth the money and very easy to install them!
when i get my old 66impala back on the road next year im going to replace its exhaust with true duals and dual bullets also. should sound great on the 400motor under the hood.
right now it just has some turbo mufflers on some ghetto @ss dual pipes me and my dad rigged upa few years ago.
only downfall now is my dad returned his welding tank so if i need to do any welding i have to go buy my own gas tank for the welder so my first welding project is going to cost me freakin about 200-250bucks.

shoot atleast you know how to weld im a short of hands on experience to do some welding lol. wit the stock 350 in my tahoe the sound at cruising speed and WOT is crazy. i did run straight pipes for a week, exactly a week. lol and put got the bullets put on because the interior drone is crazy! and the tone was uneven and too much pop pop pop. Definitely recommend bullets.

Re: 96-98 muffler?

Well guys, right now all I hear is the air being sucked into the motor
It is so quiet, I don't even know it's already started.
I have an 87 monte SS that is my 'toy'.
I'm not really trying to make my 5,000 pound truck anything special as far as performance goes, but damn it would be nice to hear something other than air flowing and a motor rev up while getting on it.

Does that include those tips? Where did you find them? I've been looking for a pair (particulary 2.5" inlet), haven't found any for under 80 each.

Back to the topic, you could try a dual out muffler or 2 mufflers and an H-pipe, but run them out the side which is a lot cheaper than full tailpipes.

Or, this is the cheapest 2 into 1 muffler Summit lists, although you'd need adapters to fit them onto your intermediate pipes and tailpipe, anything closer in size is crazy expensive:
http://www.summitracing.com/parts/IMM-7552/
There is also this which wouldn't be hard to fit, it's a single in/dual out but being a glasspack it should be reversable, at any rate you could cut off the glasspack from the y-pipe on it and flip it so it faces the right direction, being cheaper than making a y-pipe:

Re: 96-98 muffler?

i hate those side exit pipes when you can see them from the rear!
i wish someone made a full polished stainless pipes that could be bent up by any muffler shop that was reasonably priced! i hate seeing a nice shiny tip and then the raw steel soon to be rusty connected behind it! i even hated it on my old trucks rear pipes!

Re: 96-98 muffler?

How can side exits be seen from the rear when they're in front of the tires? Mine you might be able to just barely see a bit of chrome stick out but you have to be at an angle. What I hate most is single exhaust that's sticking out anywhere behind the axle. I'm not a fan of it in front of the axle but I can't stand it behind like the stock location, it just looks like a piece of the truck is hanging like it broke off. If it's tucked up it's not too bad but not when it hangs low like stock.

Re: 96-98 muffler?

AznTahoe....it's just a si/do Summit Muffler

88Vic.....the tips are 2.5" stainless T-309 Vette Tips from MCD Automotive in Ohio (42.00)pair

Addiction2bass.....you have your likes and I have mines that's what makes this world go around.
Oh and BTW..... quarters have been notched so that the tips sit up higher and you actually only see a small section of the tips from the rear of the truck when standing or driving behind it.

87SSTPI....I personally think if you're only interested in replacing your muffler don't expect big sound increases or more power with only a muffler. If you want tone and much better exhaust flow go for a true dual set up. If you want just a tadd more sound a si/do 2.5" set up will do ya.

Thanks a bunch for the compliment but it will look much better after the truck is painted. I've got mixed opinions on the look because it's not the norm. Some like it some don't but as I always say **you got yours and I got mines**. As for sound she's actually just a bit louder than stock with a nice moderate dual tone but sounds sweet at cruising speeds.

Re: 96-98 muffler?

Still kicking around ideas, but these are the parts I got to make my "y". Not sure how to make my final outlet yet though (2 3/4" or 3") depending on the muffler I choose. 2 3/4" seems to be an oddball muffler size so far though.

Re: 96-98 muffler?

i would not run the y pipe i just did that this saturday on my 97 burb it had a magnaflow catback dual in and 3" out it was to quite, and the muffler had some rust holes i had the shop make a 3" ypipe and i bought a 3"in and 3" out flowmaster 40 series and i used the same magnaflow tail pipe. now my exhaust is barely louder at idle, but above 1500rpm i have way more backpressure and and i can feel the drag when i let off the gas and coast ,from the increased engine braking.i am going to replace it with a 2in 1 out magnaflow and just live with the quiter sound ,but i gain some mpg..........

Re: 96-98 muffler?

Is there something wrong with dual tailpipes? Might be more expensive but it'll be louder and IMO sound and look a lot better. Throw some 3"-4" tips on and it's even deeper and louder.

Re: 96-98 muffler?

I simply want to hear my truck once it has been started so I don't accidently double-key the ignition.
So far I have less than $20 in pipes bought from the local auto parts store, and honestly if it wasn't for the goofy retarded assnine setup that GM put on this truck I would already be done with it by simply investing that $20 in a glasspack.......done.
Also, it would be nice if my 5.7 Vortec was in fact louder than my 6 yr old's battery powered razor scooter.

I know a simple dual kit woul do the trick, but I wasn't looking to spend much more than the price of a glasspack or something similar.
The 2 3/4" pipe is oddball too (go figure).
I still hope to get it done for far less than $100 and have 'some' sound.
